OK so I don't crew my Albacore, but my stand-in crew (wife) last week pointed out that the Allen autoratchet jib blocks don't actually ratchet at all. I found a couple of others in the spares box, and they don't ratchet either. Are these unusual, or is this a common problem? £100 spent on Harken switchable blocks so I don't upset any more crews!

If you send them back they will change them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but in my experience Harken don't deserve the good reputation they have. I've had two Harken ratchets go in recent years. Prefer Ronstan.

Again, if you send them back they will change them.
I like the Ronstan ratchets i must admit, but I've had two of the new Harken 40mm autos as i think their tie solution will fit better around my existing fittings - we will see! Harken are certainly not the runaway leaders that they used to be in terms of longevity, i think part of this is other manufacturers catching up the other part is the constant desire to make things lighter coming at a compromise. |

Without wanting to state the obvious too blatantly, some auto ratchets have an adjustment for the load they kick in at, adjusted by turning them round the attachment point. Is it possible they just need adjusting?

It's also possible they just need cleaning. A good soak in hand-hot water may help.

All blocks ratchet or free running and what ever brand should be hosed down with fresh water after use.
