I've got a relatively recent Ent dinghy, originally built by Glynn Walker, that is in need of some renovation having been sat for a number of years untouched. The main areas of work are going to be replacing: the decks; a section or potentially all of the rear foredeck beam just behind the kingpost; and the outer gunwale rubbing strips. 

My questions at this stage are mainly around materials I should be using, does anyone know:

- I'm thinking the deck is 4mm marine ply and I was planing on using Robins tiger-elite to replace it. Does that sound about right?

- What is the foredeck beam likely to be made of? 

 - What are the rubbing strips likely to be made of? The current ones are contrasting light colour compared to the decks. From what I've read online I'm thinking Ash is potentially a good bet.

Apologies if I've got some terminology mixed up here but hopefully you can tell what I mean.

Pale rubbing strakes? Yes, very likely to be ash.

Structural beams in older boats are likely to be mahogany. Not sure about newer hulls.

Thanks for the replies folks. I've emailed spboats to see if they can help. Would this boat have come from there originally or is Ent building just something Glynn has done in the past? From looking at the website it doesn't look like they make them anymore if it was from there.

What is interesting is they have a picture on there website of a solo which has identical rubbing strips to my Ent:

Re the structural foredeck beams this is also a light colour compared to the decks so not Mahogany. But I'm not convinced it is the same as the rubbing strips, although it could just be different varnish making it look different.

Sitka spruce is used in boats quite often. Ash, as found in wooden tillers, has a tendency to go black, and while strong (hence the use in tillers) is quite heavy. Also seen maple used.

Glynn Walker was at Don Marine - they went under in the early 00's i believe, a shame they were great craftsmen.

Glynn then did canal boat fit outs for a number of years, and then joined SP boats a few years back. He will remember your boat!

If your boat is a Walker Enterprise, it was built by Lloyd Walker and not Glynn.

If it is a Don Marine, then it will have been Glynn.

My pale gunwhales have gone a bit black in places! Is sycamore the other pale wood they might use?

I've spoken to Glynn just now, really nice chap and couldn't have been more helpful.

The answers for anyone's future reference are:

decks - 6mm tiger ply from Robbins timber

fordeck beam - either Ash or sycamore in my case since it is a light colour. He said he also used mahogany on some boats. Apparently Ash has a strong dark grain and will be rough to the touch. I think mine is Ash.

Gunwale rubbing strips - sycamore with a Brazilian mahogany inlay.

Thanks for all the help folks. Now I've got to decide whether to tackle it myself or send it off to SP boats for Glynn to do it for me .... Ermm

Glynn at SP boats did some deck replacement/repairs to our Ent fairly recently. Very impressed with the workmanship and not as expensive as you might think either. Turnaround was very quick too. Highly recommended
