In the UK most (if not all) sailing clubs only allow sailing members to vote. I suppose if enough social members joind as sailors and paid the higher sub they could do just that. Plenty of clubs at the moment though so if it happened at yours or mine we'd have little trouble finding an alternative (or we could do what several yacht clubs did back in the 1800s and start up a new club just around the corner (source - the paper linked to in the first post of this thread).

Big mistake going for social members, we got to exactly that point this summer when the 'cheap Beach Hut by the sea only minutes from town' element voted overwhelmingly to stay put in our constricted old wooden shack and refused to even entertain the possibility of a brand new club with more facilities and boat storage.

Like rs400atC said, you can get meals, social stuff everywhere but somewhere to launch and race boats are fast dilapidating or disappearing.

Even so, I think people often stumped up fairly serious money to start sailing clubs before WW2.

I think I could point at a few that have gone a long way down that road.
Once you lose some semblence of regular racing, it's toughto turn things back.

Remember that some pubs kinda forgot that tbeir customers now need something different and expect more (i.e quality food, family facities, etc) and now, for the most part, no longer exist or are struggling. Sailing clubs take note.

Or were subjected to a business model which forced them to do things differently....not enough margin on the traditional stuff like beer and scratchings to pay the lease....

Sailing clubs don't need premises or land, they need water. My holiday club has no clubhouse or formal membership just an email list and we turn up on the beach at the appointed time, pay out £5 and race. Outgoings = £0 so every penny goes to our chosen charity, the local RNLI crew. Okay it helps that most of our 'members' spend their weekends on one of two caravan sites adjacent to the beach from which we launch but we get good sailing. The racing is more fun racing than good club standard, but that encourages those who don't normally race to take part and we had, typically, 25 boats out on each regatta day. And, the local lifeboat turns out to give us safety cover (they use it as a training day).

That paradigm wouldn't suit everybody but it has been going since 1961 and works well. We have other fundraisers too and presented Holyhead Lifeboat crew a cheque for £1350 at the end of last season.

Personally I think ttc546 and Sam Spoons are bang on the money with their thoughts. Well done chaps. FWIW, it rings true to me.
