Well there's a thing....

well there's a lot of truth in that - I have to admit my opinions on sailing clubs have slided somewhat since growing up at coastal or river clubs where the social was as important as the sailing.  A quick flick through the Facebook page of one of my old sea clubs and you'd be mistaken for thinking it was a gastro pub with all the foodie posts.....  a long way from the scampi and chips I remember.

Naturally that'll get sneered at by some quarters, but you know what, they've moved with the times to fend off competition for other leisure spend and retained their traditions to boot.  They're also sitting on a lot of expensive real estate, and if I believe the general vibe around the place, have a very healthy balance sheet for a members organisation.  If I lived there, I'd certainly still be a member and enjoy whatever sailing came around as a result.... and there was always lots on offer, from all sorts of dinghies through to crewing on powerboat cruises if that's what got your rocks off.

Inland - well it's a different kettle of fish, and yes, maybe a sailing centre charging a market rate, would suit a lot of folks better.  Who knows though.... it's not like any club is going to try anytime soon; and if they did, it would probably be 'cos they were on their uppers and by which time it would be too late to succeed anyway.

* Wednesday Evening Racing - for people who cant get out at weekends
* Friday Evening Racing- for people who cant get out at weekends
* Sunday Racing - 2x Races in the morning - 10:30am & 11:30 - so not a whole day commitment
* Facilities / Activities for Wives and Children to WANT to visit the sailing club
* Kids Coaching / Learn to sail
* Working alongide a Sailing school that encourages people to join the SC.
* Number of exciting club boats to sail - nothing like a modern wayfarer etc.
* Great Caterers
* Bar open evenings and weekends with Social Events
* End of Year Prize Giving / Social

*** PLUS Lovely Sea Venue, Warm weather, all year round sailing, F3-4 Every day and always high water + Lots of OK Sailors to race against

Sounds like a good set of aspirations, apart from the OK  Wink

I would add;

*Racing on time
*Good beer after racing
*Adult coaching
*Decent water
*Decent boatpark and launching
*Clean and modern changing rooms and showers

I can feel a useful thread coming on ...

Happily living in the past

Davidyacht -I'd second the morning races at the weekend idea. Leaves much more of day available for other commitments

 Turnturtle - I think what you are trying to say is multi use changing facilities (families, disabled etc) just like most modern leisure facilities.

AIUI Queen Mary have basically worked on an all paid staff and no duties model since inception, although I believe now they offer a reduced sub for doing race management. I don't think they've ever gone bust, so its worked, but in spite of having the biggest bit of water for miles around there are numerous other healthy clubs in the vicinity working on a more traditional model. QMRSC certainly has its own distinctive atmosphere, presumably as a result. It isn't where I choose to sail, although I'm in the catchment area.

Their subs + dinghy berth are (exactly) twice what I pay though (admittedly I'm oop North).

Well honestly that's good really isn't it? sure, we have differing preferences and priorities (at this moment in time anyway), but if both club types can remain sustainable into the future, then that sounds like good local provision to me.

Having read a lot of the above, I'd say (admittedly biased a bit) Burghfield SC near Reading ticks a lot of those boxes!
