Well that was a crazy race and a half!!!
If you haven't been watching the JJ Giltinan, you should have this morning! The camera cat has really upped the camera angles this year with aerial drone footage and multiple camera angles. Anybody else see the carnage today? |

Hi Jack
You beat me to it... I was about to pretty much start the same thread. Always amazes me how good a job these guys do at covering a sail boat race and the drone footage is giving us even more to look at. And yes crazy race. One of those that was interesting to watch but i bet no one came off the water saying how much fun it all was!

Yep... that race was hellish to race in. But great to watch! They've had a lot of weirdness this year... like the start line having the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship parked on it! But the coverage is getting better and better, which is great. Shame they lost there first drone though!

Anyone know what's happened to Killo?
The presentation has lost a bit of it's Ozziness without him on board. Absolutely hooked on the footage though. Knowledgable commentary from three guys that know their stuff and some of the best close sailing footage captured anywhere.

A pity that none of them seem to know the rules when it comes to shortening course. It is NOT correct to hook the last mark before finishing; boats should simply sail across the finish line from the direction of the previous mark. See World Sailing Case 129.

This years JJ's has been a fantastic watch. The footage and commentary has been exceptional. And shows what can be done to televise sailing cheaply. Well done the 18 footers.
What's not so good is the way the result was deiced! I think it not good for the sport of sailing to have a boat that wins 4 races out of a series of 7 with a discard (so 4 out of 6), not win because of protests off the water. Especially when they have initially been given redress and then have that redress removed by another boat protesting the committees decision which is claimed to adversely effect their series. Which then effects the decision of the lead contesting boat, to protest when they have been involved in another incident, causing them to collect a lot of points because they choose to do turns. Rather than risk the committee room AGAIN! What makes that even more sour is that the protesting boat that removed the redress, was clearly not in a position to win and were retiring from 18's after this event. It looks like cronyism. Especially when that boat has clearly been braking sailing regulations in previous races throughout the season, by not doing turns when there has been clear rule infringement. That's a poor show. Well done to Thurlow Fisher, but i'd feel very cheated if I was Yamaha.

I suspect there is more to it than we are privy to but I do agree with what you are basically saying.
To be fair both boats deserved to win. Thurlow were, and have been now for years, impressively consistent and in the end it was consistency that won out. Yamaha on the other hand were clearly the fastest boat on their No 2 rig and if there hadn't been any light wind days it would have been a whole different story. To me though the biggest winner was again the coverage. What a great job those guys do in bringing the race to us. I hope the people that televise events like the Americas cup, Volvo, Olympics etc were watching because they could learn so much.

Umm... dunno that Yamaha's light wind speed was that much worse? They had a 5th on a lighter day. Similar to Thurlow. And then there are the two days that were marred by protests: A. an exceptionally strange day weather wise. B. choosing to do turns rather than go the protest room again. Thurlow have defiantly been consistent with regard to the AUS season, but then again we don't get any coverage of the New Zealand series on YouTube. And I believe they are pretty consistent in the NZ series?
I just think the protest committee decision to change there initial decision two days after the initial decision is really detrimental to a sport, it turns sport into a court room drama which is in my view very bad for sailing.

But is it as detrimental as getting a decision wrong and not correcting it? |

Jim... obviously this is just a onlookers view. So you don't know the in's and out's of it. But my point is that it 'looks' bad to have this sort of situation. It looks like a partizan committee, whether it is or not is difficult to tell. But its pretty clear that Yamaha were an extremely fast boat, winning 2 of there 4 races by about 4 mins. And to have a decision overturned they way it was in any sporting situation doesn't do the sport any favours. In my view.
