Accommodation, in a holiday location, in school holiday time - which is when most champs are held - is expensive. Yes, camping is an option for those that choose to, but for us it's a family holiday and we like our comforts. That means stumping up.

I doubt it too. Crufts is for dogs.

A lot of classes, £1500 won't get you the sails you need to win the nationals.
The last championship I did, it wouldn't cover food, beer and accommodation.

Luckily there are people about who are prepared to spend some cash, or the rest of us wouldn't have anything to buy secondhand.

Ooh, cheap shot :)

£1500+ for food beer and accommodation? Really?????

Mods, where is the 'ignore' button?

Of all the new single handers over the past few years, this really deserves to succeed. I was an `early adopter` with a d zero, but can see my self being attracted to this. It ticks all the boxes for me

There is a Hadron H2 due to join us in the handicap fleet on our lake.  I reckon it's going to suit its owner perfectly.  At least it will give us something new to look at that's easy on the eye.  Hopefully there is enough of a niche for the Hadron to fill to give it some longevity as a class.
Europe AUS53 & FF 3615
National 12 3344, Europe 397 and Mirror 53962 all gone with regret

Many small classes (as in boat size) this is possible, either because of boat longevity (Firefly springs to mind) or because fleets are small, so even if the standard is high, the last % of boat speed makes less difference off the start line. But a big fleet, high profile one design? You need to get the wallet out.

I don't know much about other sports TBH but I doubt you'd win Crufts on a 20 year old, £1500 nag  Wink but such boats are capable of winning at the Nats with the right stick wiggler onboard.

Where did you get the idea that the H2 is twice the price of an Aero?
Price of RS Aero 9 (RS website, today): £6670. Hadron H2: £9465.

Makes the H2 about the price of a little Hyundai hatchback.
The value is in delivering racing that people enjoy.
To those who are prepared to write a cheque.
P&B Phantom is over £9k
I dare say many people manage to spend more on other sports, try gliding, horses, golf even.

The Aero is a cracking boat, but also built by an industrial business so seem very consistent in build. Apart from a couple of very early boats, they have been remarkably trouble free.

As I said all boats have gone up. However look at each price in context and these boats seem reasonably priced relative to each other.

Surprisingly I went sailing this morning and an H2. turned up. Sailor is a very good ex blaze sailor. Boat looked fantastic on the water and only his 3rd sail, but he won the race on the water. Only my second sail in an old blaze, but whilst very different to the Aero, it was pretty good. Will try an H2 again at some point. The H2 will never sell in big numbers, but having seen it out today I think it will do fine in handicap fleets.
