plenty of sail makers make or could make 420 sails - also i'm sure there will be plenty of sails 2nd hand from those in ' the system' and competing at the higher levels
the boom is just a standard boom secion cut, finished and rigged - again any of the people who re sell Selden ( Proctor) or Superspars should be able to get one / build one up for you ... finding a secondhand boom is often harder because spars don;t wear out the same as sails and also they still seem to be less 'critical' than masts ( people will change mast section either becasue it;s the latest tredy section being used by the top of the class where there is a big choice of sections depending on crew weight) |

Budget?
You can, of course, simply roll up to a supplier of 420 bits with a substantial cheque and buy new. Depending on the age of your boat this may cost more than the boat is worth... A complete set of 3 sails new from a good maker will set you back something approaching 1500, and a boom maybe a couple of hundred. I have the distinct impression, though, that this is an older boat obtained for not too much cash. Sails shouldn't be too hard. Although in an ideal world sails are matched to masts, 420 sails should all be basically the same size, so find a class forum or something and see if you can get some used sails that are reasonable. You could also look at Apollo duck or whatever, and if someone near you is selling a boat with several sets of sails, see if you can get them to split some. Boom will be a bit trickier. Unlikely to be readily available secondhand unless you can find someone scrapping a boat. An option for the experienced and budget concious is to see what your sailing club has in the way of spars left over from scrapped boats - most do have a few - but unless you're extraordinarily lucky one would need to be adapted, and that may be a road too far for you at the moment. |
