Suprised it doesn't need some diamonds to keep the mast straight with someone dangling from the wire.

Eh? He kept that quiet from all the contemporary reports I know. The first reports, before the boat was built, said that he was aiming at the 12 Foot Skiff Interdominions. The 3.7 was designed when the Contender was still a new boat and the anointed "future Finn". |

Yes I know what you mean but it seems to work; the mast is very stiff.

I'm only quoting from NZ Association sources, it may just be anecdotal, but that is the explanation I have for the sophisticated measurement jig for the hulls, and hey he was 16(?) So many things must have been running through his mind. http://www.3-7class.org.nz/the-boat.html |

My guess... Diamonds will only control bend in one direction, so they're not going to be much help if the problem is *compression induced* bending on a round mast. With a wing mast which is thin laterally and long fore and aft they will help a trapeze boat. If the problem is lateral bend per se, then yes, they've got advantages on a trapeze boat because they aren't affected by rig tension, but the mast will still need to be stiff enough to resist compression bending. So if, by the time the lower mast is stiff enough to trapeze on safely, you haven't got a problem with lateral bend, then it makes perfect sense to omit the spreaders/diamonds and save a few quid and some drag. Given a rig derived from recent skiff design, with a stiff lower section and flex top, this all marches together. |

I sailed 3.7s a few years back, when there was much debate between the two (I had diamonds). Don't think there is any huge advantage with either - mostly it was about handling and technique.

Bruce Farr was 16 years old when he designed the 3.7?!

Don't believe so. AIUI Farr was 16 when he designed his first successful NZ restricted Moths, but the 3.7 didn't come along until he was about 22. |
