So the obvious question and something they love to do in France I've noticed with boats like the Buzz, has anyone ever built one with a retracting centreboard and obviously is it possible, not physically which of course it is, but how would the class rules consider it?

There is quite a bit of rake available in the slot on a Farr, and to my knowledge no rules that govern the shape of the board. So with in the rules you might have scope (if you were clever) to devise something that acted like a Centreboard. As for what we all conventionally understand as a Centreboard. It might be out of class as the rules stand at the moment (I think) http://www.uk3-7class.org/class-rules.html, and would be slower. But in the UK I'm pretty sure the owners / association wouldn't stand in you your way and allow you to race with us.

I think the thing that would scupper a regular centreboard design is this rule:

e. The centrecase slot shall be located between 1400mm and 1750mm from the aft face of the transom, measured along the keel of the boat, and shall not be more than 24mm wide.

But this gives you hope of designing something that could work for you:

a. Rudder and centreboard may be of any shape or constructions, provided that the centreboard does not exceed 1370mm in length (measured along the board in any direction, including all fixed handles, etc.)

I'm unlikely to be traipsing all over the country and would be strictly club handicap racing on the sea, (what is the PY by the way) What I'm looking for is a lightweights Contender which this thing could be and the thing about the Contender it has a massive retracting foil and it is usually a very good foil. It would mean CB case and flushing strips which I agree would make it slower, but froma beach launch/recover convenience stand point and wired in buoy rope interface recovery solution, something less likely to inconvenience me.

I realize that launching from a beach with a daggerboard is not as simple as with a swinging centerboard, but given the rake on the board, if you don't have it all the way down, launching should be fairly straightforward. Much less hassle than on a boat with a non-raking dagger...

And you already have someone local building one ... just saying ;)

AFAIk, you don'thave to have conventional slot gaskets with a contender.
You can fill the majority of the slot with a rigid packing piece once afloat, leaving just enough slot length to rake the board back a fair amount downwind..

If you built a mutant Farr with a pivoting CB in a case, you could use a dagger board in a sort of cassette if you wanted to class race? I'm sure I've seen that done before, can't remember what the boat was....?

Regarding the whys and wherefore's my world is just full of reasons for retracting plates, it's not just the launching, it's things like recovery having to beat ashore in offshore winds but with waves that will pick you up and have you on the beach before you can pull the plate is a prime example, then there are the round island races I like to do, it's not coincidence Blazes do so well in the round sheppy race, it's not just the banditry. Then there can be all manner of sub water potentials for damage that the board kicking back avoids.

5o5s do it the other way... they are supposed to have swivelling plates, but instead some have a swivelling cassette in the case, and a daggerboard blade that goes vertically up and down. ( there may have been a rule change to ban this recently )
