Forgetting the design rights issues for a moment, the decision at club level or open meeting level to race with non laser sails on laser hulls should be decided democratically and written into the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, otherwise clubs are turning a blind eye to cheating (that is what it is) and is no different to any other breaches of the racing rules of sailing.

If you want to accuse anyone of cheating, the way to do it is a protest.
I'm surprised anyone is allowing replica sails at a 'Laser Open Meeting'.

Laser Fleet at the Wilmington on Sea Boating Club Regatta I can understand it.

For sure at the top end, Laser Sailing is very much about equal boat performance and equal equipment.
That's somewhat watered down when you get to hulls a  few seasons old.
And pretty much out of the window for the hundreds of people having a thursday night pre-beer harbour tour in a Laser with a 5 digit sail number.

Has anyone thought to ask Mr C?

Laser class rules apart, more like turning up to a game of squash wth a different brand of squash racket, and a cheaper one at that. Maybe one from Sports Direct, where everyone else has a posh one.

But Laser Inc. only gets to decide the rules that apply at events where it is the Organising Authority. At an ordinary club event it is up to the club to decide what rules it wants to apply.

This thread really demonstrates what the Y&Y forum does best.

Just as well it's no longer widely read.

Not so. A club has no right to change class rules without permission from the Ca. It can hold a multi class event for lasers and not lasers, and say they all start together, but it can not say that certain class rules do not apply.

Laser inc appear to have lost authority with the majority of Laser owners. So Laser owners don't see the need to stick by Laser Inc shouts from on high.

I have no time at all for Pushchairs incorporated and not much for the ILCA. But that's not what its about, is it.
Competitors in the sport of sailing are governed by a body of rules that they are expected to follow and enforce. A fundamental principle of sportsmanship is that when competitors break a rule they will promptly take a penalty, which may be to retire.

Laser inc has zero authority over most Laser owners.
Only those who choose the join the CA are subject to the class rules.
How many are in the CA?

Of course if you aren't in the CA, you're not racing in the Laser class, even if you are in a club race for Lasers.

Not True.
The definition of Rules includes the class rules, and RRS 78.1 requires that a boat is maintained to comply with her class rules.
