Last night there were 29 lasers on the startline at Draycote for the mid week race series.

Can any other clubs beat that for a club race?

With another Olympic year on us, a UK World Champion just crowned and a growing reminder that great racing comes from the people, not the boats or the hype surrounding them; you do have to wonder if the Laser will see quite a renaissance in the hearts and minds of your typical dinghy sailor.

I still believe the Solo is the nicer option for pure sailing - but who can argue with those numbers on the water if racing, especially club racing, is the focus of your sailing time?

We had mid 20s of boats in general last night. A good third of them were Lasers or Radials. Great joy overtaking them in the gusts in the Minisail!

We regularily get between 8 and 10 Contenders out at Weston. On a proportion of numbers of boats in the UK that must beat 29 Lasers anytime Thumbs Up

8 boats out Saturday, ( all single handers ) not bad for weather conditions and out of a total of 34 members.
1 Laser, 2 Comets, 2 Mirrors, 2 Topaz and 1Minisprint.

Based on this me sailing my 300 (only 1 at the club) beats the Lasers

We had 30-40 boats out yesterday which is fairly normal for a Wednesday @ Bowmoor

Laser  is still a go to on a budget but unless you are really serious, or everyone else is blinkered in your club if shelling out for a new boat now I would never go back to a Laser. I sailed them for years, but there are so many better options available now which are so much better.

It was introduced in 1971 alongside the Morris Marina and because of the fear of de railing the cash cow it became combined with the whole legal dispute it has just not evolved to take advantage of manufacturing or rig improvements like many classes have. It was and will always be a great hull shape, but construction, foils, rig and sails are much the same (yes I know it has a new radial full, but how long has that taken? The radial was always the nicest sail so goodness knows why it took them so long and yes I know about XD but its hardly 'wow' is it).  My point being is for new buyers not blinkered by history there are so many other better boats to sail.
