I dare say citrus or whatever's ramblings have also cost him a few percent of boat sales, which must be, what, a few percent of one icon?

Nothing wrong with banter :-)

Much of this current stuff is simply a continuation of the petty minded, unimaginative, dreary and negative sniping that some see as ‘discussion’ or ‘banter’.  It is neither.  It comes across from some quarters as getting a tad desperate and those perpetuating it p*** poor ambassadors for their own class. The logic, if there is any at all to be found, must to be that somehow a class can somehow be ‘promoted’ by knocking what might be seen as a rival.  It is happening here and it happens on other forums like SA …..

Get over it guys … This sort of stuff, if anything, associates your own preferred ride with blatant negativity.  I’d bet a pound to a penny it has already cost the class(es) you yourself prefer and promote more than a few percentage points in terms of numbers.  It actually works against your objectives – can’t you see that ?   It is NOT an association or a tactic many would actively seek

How dare you have an opinion, TT!

My opinion is that you are right about the Aero, which has a far broader base than "race boat", but that a boat certainly doesn't have to be cutting edge to be a race boat. The Solo is a fine example. People buy them because there are other Solos to race against, not really as a play around at the beach boat, but the performance makes the Aero seem very sprightly indeed.

Indeed, one I'm reliably informed is ill-informed.

It's not a semantic argument, if it were I would clearly not 'win'... But some boats scream race boat, race programme, cutting edge performance etc the current epitome being A class cats, moths and the musto skiff (imho). It's the same way some bikes do over a drop handle club hack, but the Aero certainly doesn't do that, not with its Dacron rag and a mediocre performance. It's a beach boat, that's no bad thing.

Does this mean solos, streaker, comets, lightnings are not race boats.

Are we talking about the design thinking, or whether a boat is high performance?

If we are talking design, I think we can say a laser is a beach boat following the tradition of the sunfish and the like.

In my opinion the boats I have mentioned are dedicated race boats because that was the main reason for them being designed in the first place.

Ill informed, 'fraid not... In the context of dedicated race boats- musto skiffs, moths, 700s etc... It's definitely a beach boat, not a race boat. I wouldn't assume that's meant pejoratively ... Quite the contrary FWIW
