The zero and punk before it were product designed from the ground up around the noble art of singlehanded unstayed hiking boat sailing, and being the most comfortable, robust, cost efficient platform. The sheeting method, along with most other things, were designed into the very architecture of the boat from scratch. This isn't 14' of random hull with a load of "stuff" clagged onto a dished or flat deck and hope for the best.
Of course sheeting from in front of you is ergonomically superior which the zero has.
The punk main system has same purchase as zero but sheet loads are at least 50% greater due to friction (7 blocks maybe rather than 4).
I know that some people want the falls in front for 1:1 ing but it's not essential for gybeing or kinetics. I can do all I want with the zero / laser system.
Finn style air rowing, which in my mind rewards technique and fitness is a turn off for many non professionals, and is banned in quite a lot of classes where it'd be possible.

Are you being mischievous?

It's against the class rules.

Err, no I wasnt, just dont see why you wouldnt something so minor. What advantage does it give apart from ensuring more people can get through a windy gybe without a swim. Not my class, but I would vote for it.

I think there are people for whom the inability to change anything in class rules is a positive advantage. It means you can just turn up each Sunday, confident the boat is just right, and if something needs fixing you just order up the standard item. It makes for a simple life. Wouldn't suit me, but vive la difference and all that.

I think that's fair. I like that the D-Zero isn't silly strict. We're all sailing the same hull, foils, spars and sail so the fundamental platform remains the same with some room to play with control purchase, where you lead the control tails too (provided you don't pierce the hull) etc... We've even had a guy rig up a method to tune his traveller position from the driving seat so he can change gear during a race perhaps more efficiently than others could. For me and others in the fleet, it strikes a good balance between seriously strict SMOD and something a little more flexible without opening things up to such an extent that its difficult to tell what won the race.
