Phantoms are only 61kgs min weight including centreboard and fixed fittings and rope, so for the size of them they are pretty light, especially as that weight was fixed in 1971 when epoxy wasn't used. Ok not aero weight but I think its pretty good, oh and they can be built up to 3 kgs lighter and correctors added

I was never that taken with my Phant... Various reasons, but wheeling it around the dinghy wasn't one of them. Very nice stable manners... If the H2 is close enough to the Phantom in this respect, then I can see it as nothing but positive- especially compared to other great hulks like the Finn, Contender or those awful early polyester Blazes.

The Phantom is a light boat for its size - all credit to the manufacturers who have achieved this. The H2, however, has the advantage of the advances in materials that have been made over the years since the Phantom class rules were formulated: the H2 is built using carbon instead of glass. So it should be lighter than a Phantom, yes? Well no - because the H2 has 20% more material surface area than a Phantom. So that's why the Phantom and the H2 are about the same weight. |

... those awful early polyester Blazes....
... which have proved still very capable of getting in the top 5 and actually winning the National championships on several occasions in recent years against any of the later boats. All involved worked very hard to ensure a pretty level playing field was preserved when the later deck moulding etc was developed. You might not believe it but if you doubt it do check the Nationals results (inc. sail numbers) over the last decade after the later version was introduced. There is little wrong at all with well maintained polyester foam sandwich with a newish sail on top. No - Sorry we just can't buy into that particular 'urban myth' - and the facts are very checkable. BTW - Regularly mentioning the class, even in overtly -ve light on occasion as here, does do a fair bit to maintain class awareness. Carry on .... ![]() Edited by Cirrus - 14 Mar 16 at 9:17pm |

I reckon you've done a good job keeping the hadron at that weight Keith. It's a lot of material and also very fine to look at.

It sounds about the same weight as the blaze all up, same length.
Blaze hull a bit lower and narrower, but carrying the racks. Looks quite a slippy hull. I guess PY slower than a blaze, but the extra leverage and sail area will pull it ahead of Finns and Megabytes. Faster than an Aero upwind maybe but slower off wind My sweepstake PY entry 1035-1040 ?

I fell out of my H2 last Sunday at Blithfield SC. Fortunately the event was being filmed, so here is the video, which shows how straightforward it is to recover the H2 - even for an old fellow like me.

I like how it didn't invert.
Looks a little like it tripped over the bow.
