It seems to me that it gets too much attention

Only because it's another victim of what could either be a trade cartel, a corrupt body, a curmudgeonly agenda, or just plain idiocracy, you choose, but either way the number they gave the Icon is vastly out, and I have sailed it, extensively on all kinds of water and a paltry 7 point increase goes nowhere near, the best comparison could be the Merlin, that consistently beats it whenever their kite is deployed.

1 Merlin beats 1 Icon. Maybe he is a better sailor?

Very few Icon owners ever comment here - quite sensibly and keep well away from the Y&Y forum in particular.  However the boat is often cited here, unsolicited, by other forumites for reasons best known to them ... some of whom then get all far too excited when the odd iconist responds or puts a counter view.

Get a life  !   It has been a long windy winter and the world has not changed that much.  Why not take up a proper pastime this spring, make that resolution, and simply 'TRY ONE' !   Will not kill you and might just inform your opinions with a bit more in the way of substance or even useful anecdote.  We don't really care if you do or not but you never know you might even like it  and get to understand a bit more about the boat.   All the rest is simply 'keyboard hero' stuff really.  Playground silliness ‘on a forum’.

We don't knock your favorite 'ride' or keep on bringing it up every now and then… and just who did bring up Icon THIS time ?

Bottom line is many of the EN numbers are tenuous at best being based on a very limited, possibly flawed appreciation of statistical sampling theory.  To 'big up' the PN system for much of the time as giving us near certain fact is to institutionalise its very failings and to lend it credibility way beyond reasonable justification.  It is very very far from a rigorous system so for goodness sake – let us just accept it.

Now - in the generous spirit of this forum (and leaving Icon out of it for now ) What is the most inappropriate PN change this year - er that is in your opinion at least  ? Wink

Love to ignore it's handicap, but it is always brought up by the end of workers as an example of how the PYAG is corrupt, so it is difficult to say nothing. Your last post did it again.

To your point, the handicap I think is furthest out is the British Moth, as it has become self forfilling. The lower the handicap goes, the less the boat is sailed on open water, and the river results dominate more. Not sure how the stats can compare this, except for the PYAG to issue warnings about where the returns have come from in their bit about altering numbers.

Cirrus- I'm surprised you'd want forum contributors to come and try an Icon when you have such a low opinion of them?

Anyway, read through the numbers last night.   Nothing very surprising, which is good imho.   One trend that might be gleaned is that faster boats seem to be getting faster proportionally, and that would seem logical from an outside observer point of view.

The 300 came down 7 points this year (to 979) - very nearly the largest move down of any class - must be all the development going on in the class!! Or we are all just becoming better sailors year on year. Cannot blame the make up of the PYAG though as there's a 300 owner in there.

Not surprising that Byte lost two points. New builder (Hartley) and more enthusiasim within the class. I may have to tell the chaps to slow down a bit.

I did wonder... Chris obviously needs a refresher course on gerrymandering and subterfuge. LOL

Possibly a shortage of swimmers joining the class and dragging the PY down a bit?
What kind of boats do you get good PY racing against?

Musto is down another 3 - that' 13 points (i think) since i started sailing it 3 years ago, i wouldn't like to make sweeping generalisations, but i take full responsibility  LOL

Be interesting to see how many points the I14 tumble by if this new wide wing version gets adopted, its already impressively rapid.

The national 18 at 936 is a surprise, its a quick boat in a breexe and that new fat head main they were testing could make it faster in less breeze
