I have always thought that raking the mast means you are tilting the sail, stretching the profile parallel to the wind axis, leading to a smaller camber (in percent of profile length). Smaller camber ––> less pressure. Probably a very oversimplified way of looking at it. Edited by ChrisB14 - 21 Feb 16 at 10:01pm |

Anyone else get a look at it at the show. I spent a while, even got to talk to the designer guy (he was wearing a yellow blazer, you just cannot ignore a guy with a dress sense of humour, so I sidled up to him and asked my best dumbass question (Why is the mast deck stepped when it would involve less extra kit to punch a whole through the deck and mount it on the bottom.)
I can't even remember the answer I was still overawed by the blazer and wondering how such a slender guy could weigh 80 kilos, it was those two facts, (he didn't look like a big bloke and the blazer) that re awakened my interest and for a couple of moments, I seriously began to think maybe I could sail it. Then all the other advantageous bits, the no knee problems, the heeling moment, it wasn't that heavy to lift (I got to try that) even the sail didn't look anything like as bad as I first feared it might be and you can adjust the forestay on the fly. There were loads of obviously interested folk I think he's going to be onto a bit of a winner in a quiet and understated way, eventually I snapped out of my reverie when I spotted two antidotes in the form of self balers, I can't stand the things and have vowed never ever buy another boat that uses them. Other than that its a nicely turned out sailing tool and I'm sure it'll do well. Edited by iGRF - 06 Mar 16 at 3:20pm |

Did you see the Finn, where the self bailers were so tucked away, they had their own ropes to operate them??
At least it wasn't plagued with control lines for adjusting the rig.... Not like the N12 that had it's shrouds on sliding tracks, so the leeward one could be slid forward to let the boom swing out properly... Another two ropes to fiddle with, on top of all the silly mast bending ones.... I liked the simplicity of the D Zero... which didn't even bring the 3 essential controls to each side.... |

There were clearly of few bits still as a work in progress, seemed to have a lot of draft towards the head of the sale and the cunningham needed far more purchase, but looked an interesting boat. A nice thwart to keep you of the knees going forwards. It looks quite an expensive boat to build hence its not cheap - about 9k I think, but its very beamy and has a thwart all of which add to the build. Light winds at the club this morning and it was the 'heavy boats' with 'dated' round forms that went the best! Well sailed finns and the K1 were really quick - no chines on either!
The K1 never gets much of a mention and it looks so so basic, but its surprisingly good in everything from the very light to the very windy. It must have a point in the range - probably marginal planing when it loses out, but surprised there aren't more around. |

I saw the Finn the new guy is going to sail in the Olympics, I forget the name Giles something or other, then that Rodney started threatening me with Finn abuse so I had to leave, horrid thing with flat metal middle bit why would you? In fact you'd probably pay somebody not to have to sail it, those imbeciles that decide what gets used in the Olympics... not a clue.

Olympics should be the state of the sailsport Art, foiling moths, some more modern OD than the Laser, D-Zero/Aero type thing, some Asymettric thing you can actually get round a course in a Blow, like the Alto, or the RS400, twin trap and single trap pair, a notional cat and disabled sailing should be represented something like that Weta could do that. Then Windsurf and Kitesurfing. Selected by people who are actually in touch with what's going on in the sport.

Moth not a good choice as it's not one design.... I guess they could hold trials to pick one... Actually, I don't think the cyclists use one design bikes... so maybe this is a spurious argument...
Should the lightweight / heavyweight split (Laser / Finn) still exist? Or would a single weight adjusted class be better?... Where do those of a more female persuasion fit in? Should they be separated, or should all boats be sailable by all? It's a minefield!! ![]() |

Having sailed an 800, 600, 400, 4000 and musto skiff, the only boat I'd be desperate to sail and race is the Finn. The main boat I want to see at the olympics is the finn. I guess I must be out of touch with the sport. Haven't even reached 30 yet and I'm already relegated as old and out of touch...... never saw that coming. |

There are cures these days, Doug.H, mental health issues are dealt with in a much more open manner, do you want to tell the group a bit more about your problem? How long have you had this Finn fantasy? Let me suggest an exercise you can do at home... Get yourself a big wet Cod, sit on the toilet, stand up, sit down, flush, hit yourself with the Cod - repeat until you fall over with fatigue. Then to rest, tear up a fifty pound note, repeat the cycle several times. You can thank me when you're cured.
