Am sure this has been discussed many, many times, but between RS 700 and the MPS, which is easier to handle for a first timer?
Was originally thinking of buying 600 and learning on that - but no class association as I realised and also thought that might as well get 700/MPS to sail and then gradually add spinnaker! I'm 18, 6'3 and about 70kgs, DI, have sailed 420s/470s extensively, have also helmed hobie 16 a bit as well as smaller bit on the trap! Am I stupid to think about buying such a boat? Did look at Farr 3.7; too expensive, not many second hand (am going to buy 2nd hand) Also Contender, not sure about it, seem quite heavy boats Finally, just remebered -will be sailing inland |

Also will be mostly racing with PY (after the inevitable swimming!!) so there's another aspect to think of!

According to a friend who has owned both RS700 and MPS, the MPS is the way to go. He changed from 700 to MPS and suddenly started finishing races. Both are better boats than the 600.
If budget won't stretch to an MPS or 700, the 600 is still a lot of fun and will set you up for the MPS later. Go for it. Contenders are fun too, but inland, unless it's a windy venue or you fancy their circuit/events, it would not be my choice. All need an investment of time, 600 really didn't work for me because it was a second boat and my 400 sailing took precedence. |

from experience i would agree that the mps is better first time than the 700 to get along with.

Adding the kite later on a 700 would be a bad move. It is quite hard to get downwind with just the main up. Gybing it with the kite is easier than without. If you go down the assy route then you should expect to need to use them from the first time you go sailing.
My money would be on a cheap contender for a first go at single handed trapezing, I know, because I chose the RS700 and whilst I didn't struggle too much, I am also a little bit more experienced than you are by the sounds of things.

Ignore which one until you decide where you'll sail. I'm obviously a little biased owning an MPS so won't comment on the boat, but the "best" boat is the one that you can sail with others at your home club. Both boats will be a challenge and hugely fun to learn, but you'll progress up that learning curve so so much faster if you can sail with others as they will help you over than hump.

Budget wise, maybe up to £3000 or so, depending on when I get it and what funds are like (hoping to get some work in the summer...)! Have done a bit on Assy spinnakers as well as trapezing, just not together! Did wonder about adding kite later, plainly not possible but I suppose that just = more swimming! Sounds like the options are contender or MPS then?! Only thing I suppose is that MPS will be a lot more expensive?!
(PS don't want to Further complicate but would not be interested in wooden boats (contender wise) and wouldn't want to do too much work as am v busy, just want something to go sailing/swimming in!) There's a couple of lakes near me, not sure if they have any of the classes, might be one or two but need to find them! |
