Been plenty of grassroots RYA stuff going on for me and for Whitefriars, too, but I don't think this is what dougal is referring to. The "Olympic legacy" thing has been a flagship idea for many sports, including sailing, and I'm pretty sure that a limited gravy train has been enough for people to want to build little empires, even though it has made far less difference to sports participation than the work done at local level.

I think the RYA do OK, they are a small organisation in themselves (as sports governing bodies go) and in sailing in the UK there are simply too many clubs, groups and umbrella organizations involved IMO.  Each party has an agenda, they are not always (ever?) complimentary to each other and getting 'grassroots' involvement into higher levels of decision making without ending up with a situation where you can be criticised by those who lose out of favouring one party or the other is, I would imagine, very tough indeed.  I think this also shows in other aspects, like the continuing use of Ali-Pali as the Dinghy Show venue; not because all the stake-holders agree it's the best possible venue but actually because all the stake-holders can't agree what the best possible venue would be, so the status-quo ends up being 'easier' to continue with.

When there are less clubs and classes you can have much flatter governing structures and therefore far more exposure (transparency?) from top to bottom than is possible in a more complicated hierarchy.

agreed- which is where this thread has some elements of pointlessness about it (good forum chat aside)

the 600 is essentially a dead class... for most dinghy sailors that means they probably wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, even if they had better stable manners, performed to handicap etc.  So if someone wants to do whatever the hell they like to one to get it back on the water, then crack on.  Who the hell is going to stop them?  It's not like the usually pseudo-moral arguments about devaluing the class, or cheating on PY or other such collective dinghy nonsense that's equally banal hold much water in these circumstances.

It's dead, gone and buried- it's never going to have a collective resurgence, but that doesn't stop some independent examples from getting on the water again in whatever guise their owner(s) deem fit.  Good luck to them.

Wow, that's some effort gone in there. So RS700 wings and rig. RS600 hull from shrouds aft, but am I right in thinking you've grafted on the bow from something else?

Looks nice. How does it sail?

Yes and no, I sawn of the foredeck at the gunwhale then inverted it and reglassed it in, this allowed ample room for the kite. The racks are homemade from carbon tubing, the originals sawn off at the gunwhale, they extend on pins ala 700racks, the tramps are custom made by a local guy, the main, semi soft, was made by Dave Debrovnik at DS sails and modified by Paul Newell, necessary because the mast is no longer rotational, I've added spreaders and lowers. The kite and bag(not the bag shown in vid) are RS 500, I've only sailed it once since mods, unfinished, but I had no foot straps so it was precarious! It'll be finished by March, with luck.

Rushy,
I'm curious to understand the 'why' behind your project?
Do you feel the RS600 hull shape is that good that it's worth changing so much around it?
Purely theoretical interest.
TIA

First off "why?" Well I had one to start with and I just can't stop fiddling, whether it's to the betterment is almost academic. It was me that added a kite to a Blaze, well before the 100 was a concept, I can tell you which was the better boat! Then came my first 600 and then a 700, and a 100 and then the current 600.My rationale is that a 52kilo hull, which is fast, with an added kite will be a blast, I'm not trying to reinvent the class just looking for a boat that suits me, the alternatives for a hiking singlehanded with kite are not great, the D1,soo expensive, the 100 too compromised and MX ray??
