Adrenaline junkies with disposeable income (AJWDI's?) were all in Contenders when it was the ultimate singlehander.
The 600 arrived and the Contender was dropped, then the 700 arrived and the 600 was dropped and then the MPS arrived and the 700 is now dead in the water. the only reason it stopped there was that those 80s/90s AJWDI's are now too fat & old to get on a foiling moth which is attracting the 3rd millenium AJWDI's. Ironically, it's the old Contender that now has the solid class association and dedicated membership made up of real ale swilling, leather elbow patch wearing gents who are committed to their class, except me but that wasn't my fault. |

Jim is right, the Contender never was the fastest singlehander.
There was always the Unicorn/A Class. |

But we are on the dinghy forum, not the catamaran one. And the Int canoe isn't even governed by the same bunch of people, but by the bcu, so isn't a Dinghy either. So having ruled those boats out, was there a faster singlehanded dinghy in the late 60s or early 70s? |

Perhaps the reason classes like the Contender stay strong is that the bulk of the rest of the world dont have the manic turnover of classes we do in the UK so they make the international scene in these classes more stable and ready for when we in the UK remember how great they actually were. The UK has always been and I guess always will be a very packed and fluid dinghy market.

You've gotta wonder where dinghy sailing is going... sure, materials technology will always improve, albeit at a slower rate... But our understanding of hydro- and aerodynamics has been pretty good for a long time.
Classes like the RS600 arrive, and achieve brief popularity, and get discontinued, with only a few sold before the next great thing arrives (Only 400 RS600's built??) The Contender and such like have a comparatively massive following around the world, due to them being really ahead of the game in their time. There will always be people with deep pockets who will pay for the latest, trickest boats, but for the vast majority, something tried and tested, and cheaper has to suffice... A new Contender may be no cheaper than a new RS, but buyers know it will still be useable in ten years time, because the fleet will always be there... |
