When I started sailing in the North West, a number of clubs held dinghy team racing fixtures. does this still go on across the country?
I am not aware of any non university team racing in my local area these days, which is a shame as I learned lots about boat control back then

You're right most of it is on the uni circuit however there is a few clubs with adult teams, West Kirby SC, Spinnaker, Royal Thames YC and Rutland SC come to mind as a few. For the North West, Kirby is your best bet.

Most events are run by the uni's but adult teams are very welcome, the boozing vs sailing ratio can vary a lot between them so its worth making sure any event you go to suits your priorities.

We have team racing training every Sunday afternoon at Rutland over the winter.
It's been a very good way of getting members out. We have attracted school sailors, beginners, experienced and a previous world champion to play and coach.
Any clubs who want a challenge, let me know. Or look at the Facebook page on Rutland team racing.

My club used to have a 3 cornered event, running for quite a number of years, even had a trophy, home and away, but no more.
However we are in the planning stages of a team race against another club next year, home and away.
Handicap though.

Our club has a bi-annual fixture with another local club for a lovely silver trophy which was originally contested by those two Bath area clubs and one from Alkmaar, Holland to commemorate the twinning of the two towns and the aid from Bath to Alkmaar at the end of the second world war.
It is handicap racing rules though rather than team racing but the plan for the next event is an away weekend at a neutral venue somewhat larger than our puddle and ditch.

I would like to see if I can get some team racing started at my club sometime in the future.

Apart the challenge of generating enthusiasm, the need to have 6 (or even 4) Fireflys (or similar) presents a high barrier to starting team racing.

Does any creative ideas on how to get around this 'chicken and egg' situation of boats and any other comments on getting team racing started?

One idea for boats would be to use Lasers to get started; although not a traditional team racing boat, there are lots them around, they are the same and in general people know how to sail them.

Do you have any other classes present in the club in those numbers, and could the owners be persuaded to take part, including swapping boats etc? Clearly some boats are more suitable than others, foiling Moths probably not the best choice! But how about RS200s sailed without a kite? GPs, Enterprises, Mirrors, Fevas all spring to mind (again I'd leave the kite off for any of them).

My recollection of team racing from a long way back was that it was very much a contact sport and there was a reluctance to use own boats for fear of damage.

Having no recent experience have the post 1996 rules changed the team racing game much, particularly at top levels?
