I think the IC has always been specialised and expensive. They're probably a deal easier to sail now than they were in the days of wooden masts and sliding seats though.

I had 605, (pre production boat), 628, 707 I think, 860 and have now been the proud owner of 608
for about 5 years. As others have said I absolutely love the boats and can enjoy sailing it regardless of racing or not. The reason I left was the migration of all my pals to either mustos or 700's and eventually followed suit I saw 2 or 3 people racing nice looking 600's at Castle Cove while attending another open there and thought at the time "from small acorns..." I would try to participate in a nationals if it was just over a weekend. To bring it back on topic, I do not think enough people use the small rig regularly enough. It really does make it a lot easier. Conversely to this the wide racks used when sailors are under a specific weight make it more difficult. How about a different handicap for small rig and narrow wings making it suitable for lighter or less experienced sailors

I didn't realise there was a small rig option for the 600, what size is/was it?

Think it was a removable mast extension with the same sail rolled and zipped at the foot |

I rest my case Jim. I suspect you are very generally very well informed about this sort thing, but if nobody reduces the rig size you wouldn't know. The bottom removable mast stump is about 2 foot long. You remove this and zip up the bottom 2 foot of sail. The shrouds and trap lines have additional ferrules for the shorter mast length. Takes about 5 mins to adjust from one to the other, (assuming mast extension not seized in main mast). Sorry can't tell you the reduction in sail area, but the main benefit is that it does not load up on bear aways, is easier to tack and far, far less likely to nose dive. |

A friend of mine bought one when he was having a late mid-life crisis at 60. Previous to that he had sailed the same Laser for 30 odd years. It was a disaster at our gusty little inland club...no one could sail it. 12 years later and on his second Supernova he is still sailing happily.

Roger Tushingham told me an amusing story of him trying one out at Minorca, Roger for those who don't know him did an Olympic campaign back in FD days was/is an accomplished dinghy sailor, way better than me and he failed so my view was what's the point, like the 300 let ignorant youf bash their heads against the force four wall.
Sailing dinghies is in a better state without that sort of senseless elitism being bandied about, although i do love the basic idea contained here, a frankenboat run what you brung event, maybe something would evolve that could be sailed without eons of time dedicated to it. |

Errr, what wrong with the 300? Tricky yes but quite achievable to the skilled sailor. 600 however is a real problem particularly inland. It would be boring to go on about how i know, but I do.
