We have a pretty active Facebook page going for the 600 these days with a lot of enthusiasm amongst owners.
Mostly, though, it's people fairly new to the boat that are still trying to develop the skills and trying to begin staying dry! (I'm a perfect example!). Confidence is one of the issues - ie: It's still a fairly daunting task to think about taking my boat out on the race course with others around me whilst I'm still getting used to/learning the boat. However, we have been toying with the idea of informal training/social events and, as I bought my boat specifically to take part in next years Birkett, we have that event targeted as a potential fleet race. I have some 15 signed up to that group(including 2 from Ireland) and, hopefully, we can get at least 10 to turn up. The key is pretty much starting all over again with this newbie enthusiasm. I love my boat, absolutely love it. My first proper time out on big water saw around 35 capsizes in 3 and a half straight hours. The short time I spent actually on the boat and blasting up, down and across Bala bought the biggest smiles to my face. Second time out? - just 5 capsizes in two hours and a massive massive sense of achievement. It's a beast alright, a pretty uncompromising one at that, an incredible challenge to me. However, I'm not going to let it beat me. I'm not sure the class will see a massive 'resurrection' as such, but I'm hoping that this kind of 'beginners bond' will see a few weekends at various venues/clubs next year. |

I fear the class is dead now but of course there are boats out there that will get passed around and sailed by enthusiasts ...
It offers some very cheap thrills for those not really interested in class racings. It is probably the hardest of all the single handed trapeze boats to sail; and that includes the one with kites.

It was the only boat I have owned recently that would tempt to just to go sailing for pure fun (instead of windsurfing etc).
In many ways it was more fun to just sail than race. It certainly had some horrible tendencies/frustrating (moistly due to the fully battened main) but, when sailed properly (not often in my case sadly) - it was just awesome. It always felt that you could not afford to be out of it for long - after a few weeks off it seemed back to square 1. It was like have a very high maintenance but very beautiful wife |

The 600 as a challenge is just that, all above and more, I've had 2 the first one tbo I gave up too early and bought a 700, ha,just a different challenge. I still have no 730 and had a soft sail built by DS sails in an effort to learn more about the boat without battling with the main, being 60+ I couldn't cope with all those capsizes! It worked very well although was probably a bit slower but being upside down is not fast either. This leads me back to the topic of this forum, what else could be "modified" to help this super boat endure.

The 600 hull is way too tippy for any more sail (or sails)
A 700 style semi battened main might be that way to go to make it a little more docile ? |

I can assure you the 700 style main(although smaller) keeps you drier and rarely into irons, it can happen if you hit a wave mid tack but if you do its a lot easier to get out.

If the IC is becoming more specialised and expensive then as a really left field idea how about taking the wings off the 600 and replacing them with a IC style sliding seat.
Probably end up more tricky to sail. |
