Given the foiling 600 didn't really take off, a poor pun, there must be an awful lot of 600's not being used and judging by the number for sale not many people want them. I know there is a keen few who probably have mastered the beast but it's not an obvious choice for mere mortals. That is a great shame because it is one of the best boats RS have produced,IMO.As I see it its demise hinges on two factors,1 that mainsail, 2 no kite. How about this as an idea, car meetings, races,hill climbs etc run classes for modified cars that have the major elements of the original car in place, most else is free choice.Thus we have an excellent hull and foils in the 600,above the waterline is free for the industrious to configure. Over to you.....

Hmm, in last year's PY list the the Contender had 1977 races, the RS700 1218, the RS600 1020, and the Musto Skiff 1008. Its not immediately obvious that the lack of a kite is a problem for popularity in a trapeze singlehander. You could argue that popularity is roughly inversely proportional to difficulty though.

I'm suggesting a move away from one design boats that does tend to stiffle experimentation, a development boat for the masses if you like.

Fair enough.

Not really sure what you're going to gain to be quite honest. A faster rig on a 600 would tend to make it more difficult to sail rather than easier, because the standard rig is backed off a bit. Maybe a more modern rig could have a bit more and nicer gust response, with a square top, but rig development does get rather pricey because you need so many new sails and masts.

Basically though I'm sure what you'd end up with would be rather like a modern Moth rig, in the same way that the 600 rig is something of a detuned version of a Moth rig from its era.

I always hope that the 600 fleet will somehow gain momentum and start having a strong circuit again. Not sure that any modifications would help as I think its a pretty vice free boat anyway.

It is great to hear that club races are still well attended by 600s. Most of them will be about 20 years old now with the pre 650 numbers even older. In fleet racing I never missed the kite and maintain that it is just as enjoyable without one in a big fleet, while handicap racing its definitely not as much fun though.

Back in the day, Clive Everest who designed it experimented with a bigger rig with taller mast but the mast, or masts failed and the idea was given up on.

Now the foiler is a completely different animal. Most enjoyable learning curve I've had but can be very frightening. Its the only boat I felt it necessary to wear helmet after too many near misses with the wand mechanism following to much foil lift at speed on starboard.

I'm not convinced that any small trapezing foiler is viable. I suspect its much better to be locked in by toe straps. I also was never personally able to get it going upwind effectively. It always seemed down at the stern or lost foil grip if trimmed evenly.

The view as to why the fleet failed was the introduction of 11K carbon boats, out performing the old ones and leading to money influenced results.

Not sure myself. I just think it was a bit too much boat for most!  

So, if these issues are resolved I'd probably get back on one.

The 600 rig is a moth rig from the previous era. The sail profile was contemporary ( a scaled-up Caws moth sail ) but the mast was from the previous era before stumps - bend low down at the gooseneck instead of bend in the middle or above the hounds. The luff round on the sail is excessive compared to mast bend = a bit too much fullness, but it makes it easy for the spar maker/sailmaker to have a bit of variation - the sail never goes creasy and too flat and wrinkly.
