Or the disconnect between club racing Lasers and the Squad and Olympic circus?  I have owned several Lasers which I really enjoyed sailing at club level, but as soon as I went on the Open and National circuit I hated the experience ... The sailors were too aggressive (quite literally) for my liking.

Interesting, I've never sailed at an Open or Nationals in a Laser, though I've done a lot of club sailing in them. However, I've been involved in running a number of Opens and Nationals of a range of classes, all were fun to do, with one exception - a class where there was little or no interest in helping other competitors launch or land on a shingle beach in a break, or much interest in joining in the social side on offer. No prizes for guessing the class! Being fair to them a lot of those involved had squad placings or even livelihoods which could be affected by how they performed, so the degree of self centredness is no great surprise. But it does illustrate how different the culture of the National and Open circuit is in an Olympic class compared to the non Olympic ones.

I remember going to a Laser inlands on my own, no-one else from my club, at Chew Valley in the early 90s.  I launched on Saturday and the guy the helped me with my launching trolley was Iain Percy!

Might well be right about the culture in some Olympic classes (I can't comment on the laser so will take your word for it) but I can say that I've found it not to be the same with all Olympic classes, Finn culture is nothing like that - fortunately!

Doesn't matter if all boats are the same ... You are confusing recreational sailing with racing, a common mistake

I was talking about racing.

I agree Mike, but just finishing the thread - class was for sale, and now sold.

Apparently not here. But why on earth are you concerned about having it repeated?
