The trouble is, AIUI, its not really a conventional sailing club any more. When the sailing club went insolvent it had to sell off everything, including all safety boats. Its really complicated, but if I understand things correctly basically the new owners or at least lessors of the water, who acquired it after the sailing club went into liquidation, provide a rudimentary safety boat cover, and don't want a conventional sailing club there.
Funnily enough the old lessors sold the rights on soon after the sailing club, a sitting tenant, had gone into liquidation.

So who are the goodies and baddies here? I found the article in the Courier hard to follow but it seemed to me that members of Bewl SC are leaving in droves because there are not unlimited numbers of volunteers available to look after their kids. One contributer seemed to be suggesting that the minimum level of safety cover required for a youth event was FIVE safety boats. As always it is better to take everything you read in the papers with a huge pinch of salt. FWIIW when I was ten I used to sail by myself all the time, albeit on the River Cam which is only about five feet wide. Last time I was there they had a rescue boat parked in the reeds! In fairness, not much else had changed in the fifty odd years since my previous visit - I recognised several of the boats and even a couple of the people - one of whom was in the rescue boat.

Gods waiting room. Because of our elderly demographic and water level dropping alarmingly due to canal repair problems, we scan the rapidly appearing slimy silt with considerable trepidation. Why did those members disappear mid season a few years ago? Were we to be reunited with their composted form or are they living still in peaceful retirement. So far just a Supernova rudder has been exposed and in trying to retrieve it I sank waste deep into a sort of thick grey custard. As I descended vertically I had visions of the mud closing over me  with a gloop leaving just my hat floating. There is, I reflected, no name in my hat so my disappearance would for ever be a mystery. We did recover the rudder...but by boat.

Wasn't that part of the problem? When the fleet of Solos all up and left the year before?

I thought the next club for Solo sailors was Pearly Gates YC.
