The problem is that whatever boat you assign some will be favoured some will be disadvantaged. Either because of their physical size or skillset.
It is an interesting diversion but, in my view, hardly a definitive way to declare who is best of the best in the world of dinghy sailing.

Snipes would be a good choice - pretty weight tolerant - but try finding a fleet of them in UK.

Top report from Dave Acres (RS300 Rep) at http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/186176/RS300-at-the-Endeavour-Trophy
TBH sounds like a pretty all round good event to me...and that from a singlehander! Just needs a few more so-called rock stars (Pinnell/Gillard/Brace/Fuller types) to chance their arms! |

Looking back at this thread I'm surprised anyone picked someone else than Ben. Professional sailor, during a in-form year, sailing a boat he favours, with a favourable crew, who be also has history of sailing with.
However, you can't say his win was only due to the boat the event was sailed in. Over the Merlin Nationals and the endeavor (18 races), Nick only beat him in two races. Whichever way you cut that, it points to Ben being a deserving winner. The obvious missing name (from 2015 nationals winners) is James Peters. It would of been tight between the two, and James would have certainly taken a few races from Ben. As for what boat the endeavor should be sailed in... It a bit of a catch 22... if a boats is abundant enough to find a fleet of 20, it's also likely one or two of the sailors has experience in it. Using older classes or none strict-one design makes it harder to source equal boats, even if there are enough laying around, a problem I see with many of the suggestions in this thread. Going for a doublehander is also preferable, as being able to select an appropriately sized crew is still the best weight equalization system I know of! Doing dinghy champions of champions race in a keel boat wouldn't be appropriate. You'd instantly not be testing some of the key skills that make a dinghy champion a champion... something which I would of thought critical in a 'champion of champions' event. So realistically, unless a sponsor steps in to build an obscure fleet of 20 identical boat around the average weight, then you're pretty much stuck with 200's, 400's or 2000's.

What we need is a proper leveller that no one with any self-respect would otherwise sail. So how about a FoweyRiver
Fowey's a much nicer place than BoC too. Racing would have to be inside the harbour though. I am now a bit worried grf will want one of these ![]() ![]() Edited by fab100 - 20 Oct 15 at 1:02pm |

The answer is yes, apparently. I saw a post saying Phil Crebbin won 6 races out of 6 back in the 70s. |

What could be fun, the event offered to various classes on the provison their members turn up with boats to supply the event.
Several Classes are approached. Nobody gets to know the boat that is selected until the very eve of the race. The supplying class get the entry fee, the individual owners get the benefit of an expert tuning their boat (or not) The supplying class gets publicity and a weekend watching the fun. |
