Why would a RO care anyway? I doubt many people enter a UKLA open expecting to use a replica, and whilst I acknowledge each club will have its own policy on acceptability, surely this would covered off long before the race officer is jotting down finish positions?

Should have said "Hard enough for the RO to tell a Radial from a Standard, regardless of whether the sail is class legal"... I really wish Performance Sailcraft had made the different rigs easier to identify.

Having the blue bit on both sides would have helped, and at the top of the mast.

Not always the case with replica sails ...

Having been RO in an open regatta week, with a long finish line, it is genuinely hard to discern between 4.7, Radial and Standard, unless you are au fait with the subtleties of the class.  Add to this the issues of replica sails ... which presumably are out of class, but for competitors to protest about, and one wonders whether UKLA should get its house in order ....

This is something that could become a problem for the Aero, where at our club there is quite a lot of rig sharing.

Didn't the UKLA ban a club from hosting or at least withdraw their open after they allowed non-class legal sails to compete in a certified class event.

David, I was thinking more of the "Real" rigs, where the back corner of the sail is often hidden by another boat, but a blue top panel would have made the sail really easy to spot. Adding in replicas just adds another layer of complexity, that's for sure.

The Aero certainly needs something more than a small number in a circle to ID the boats.

Yes, they insist that only Lasers sail in Laser events. But then most CAs disapprove of people competing in boats that don't measure.

ISAF should never have accepted the Laser Radial as an International class without having a distinctive sail logo.

The Aero sails aren't too bad, although different colours would be better. Worst thing about the Aero is this business of encouraging step downs so the poor RO doesn't know whether he's looking at an Aero 7 or an Aero 9 with a small sail up.

I still don't understand why the RO has to worry about what size of sail is being used be each boat. It is up to the competitor to correctly record the class of boat that they are racing on the entry form (sign-on form) for the race. If they don't say what size of sail they are using then I would score them on the basis that they are using the largest (fastest).

We aim to have the Ro provide a service to the competitors, not vice versa. Besides it's ten times as.Much hassle sorting things out after the day.
