But they've come down in price ... As did the RS300 when faced with a rooster alternative for club level sailing. The unique selling point of the laser is its a) cheap b) hassle free and c) provides great, fair and equal racing - I don't see the replica owners I know looking for any advantage from a replica... But I do agree, the line should not be crossed for class opens... Club racing and especially handicap racing... Whatever, more the merrier, keep it cheap accessible and enjoyable.

Bearing in mind the unique selling point of the Laser over the decades ahas always been the all boats the same bit, is it not possible that one will lead to the other. And don't forget the only reason the fake sails are cheap is because they are fake sails. Make them legal and we'd soon see the cost of sails escalate like every other class. North Laser Sail 750 quid anyone?

Which is worse, Lasers out sailing with a cheap sail, or Lasers with brambles growing out of them at the back of the boat park?

I think if any class has a large amount of rule breaking going on in it, it can hardly be a suprise if the popularity of that class falls away. If you buy a SMOD and then race it as a restricted development class, is that not likely to put others off from joining in rather than encourage participation. Or at least, attract those that are don't fund the future of the class?

Precisely... UKLA events fair enough to enforce the SMOD rule to the max, anything below, especially something as vague as a silly spreadsheet race, SFW... |

Tell that to our active club fleet Jim, most of them are on replica sails, I don't hear any complaint about the boats being something other than Lasers.

Most club handicap racing values participation,so many clubs really don't care what the sail says on it. In theory they should be setting a new handicap for boats which look like Lasers, sail like Lasers, but aren't actually Lasers, but on most club sign on sheets there wouldn't be room for that, so it gets shortened to Laser. Oddly, the new handicap for these boats closely mirrors the current set of Laser handicaps.

If you want to race a Laser in *any* event you need a Laser sail. If its not a Laser sail the boat isn't a Laser.

No choice to buy replicas when sailing in national and ranking events. The replica market proves my point that the official sails are massively over priced. Likely to be impacting on numbers and participation at higher levels. We need to encourage participation and affordability. I agree there is class BS, if enough question matters and understand sails arrive in UK at under £50 then suspect the pressure might be a little different.
