Just read:
"anyone copying the patented sail design will presumably be served a court order.
&
(The new sail) should last longer due to both its design & the heavier material without an increase in cost plus some degree of protection against those producing replicas."

Q. How will re-designing the sail stamp out patterns?

But I'm happy in the dining hall sitting with people who are eating all sorts of different varieties of apple, and the odd banana too.

there was a time when you wouldn't have been allowed in the dining hall with packed lunch Rupert ;-)

and fwiw, I think it's perfectly possible to compare apples with pears.

One tastes different to the other, which facilitates personal preference.
One costs more than the other, which facilitates economic preference.

One is neither better or worse than the other.  They are simply different, but they are comparable.

The problems start when you start trying to compare apples with Mars bars, or maybe a Cornish pasty.

I seem to have forgotten why fruit was being discussed. An analogy for something, I'm sure...

Yes agreed, and as long as we're not even entertaining the idea that apples can be compared to blackberries we'll be just fine! beside you can always buy a rip off Apple from China

Expect the new sail will have a new bigger price tag.  Laser take us for mugs. Current sails land in UK at cost price of circa £45 each.  Even with a 300% mark up, £150 seems reasonable value, given how long they last.  No doubt the patent will seek to justify more £s still.

The other day Julian B posted a table of sail prices on the SA website, including price per sq m. The Laser was near the bottom along with the 29er and 49er rags. Right up the top were Finns and Optimists, and the Oppie sail was well over twice the price per sqm as the Laser one. The Laser sail was the absolute cheapest mainsail on the list as well - cheaper than the Optimist sail. If you're getting ripped off it would seem everyone else is getting ripped off more.

It's about volume giving huge economies of scale. Other sails more developed and different patterns/ materials by different makers selling smaller volumes.  I think nine times markup on landed price in UK is obscene

400 quid? Good value if you ask me... Don't like it? Fine, no problem... Buy a replica and sail at a club who doesn't give a crap or only offers handicap racing instead. You have options...
