Radial pattern is similar to the smaller radial rig so has a family feel to it. Makes it more accessible more familiar, less of a jump and so in keeping with the class ideals.

Made my comment on the article, it's pathetic, bang up to date, and the date in question 1985.

which bit of maintaining equal (ish) performance did you not get?

If Laser sailors wanted a major point of difference between the hardware, then there's plenty of options out there....  and I'm sure there's a highly effective, well regarded and faultless system in place to ensure the racing is then brought back in line to level the playing field.   LOL

I understand the principle of design staying the same for ever so that a level playing field exists but there are limits! Obviously Laser are popular throughout the World but surely they are being chipped away at by more modern classes. I have been at our club for about 20 years and in that time I remember only one bran new Laser but three new Bytes, five new Supernovi a new Phantom and  a couple of GP,s. Even an Aero (with another on the way). As far as second hand boats are concerned Lasers only turn up as " found in the back of Dads garage" and sit keeping the weeds down in the boat park with a couple of Mirrors and a windsurfer.

Does Jeremy Corbin own a Laser?

depends on the specific manufacturer.... I doubt he'd be too keen on an Aussie import one, and anyway that's not the biggest issue with his sailing.... he still flies a red flag when protesting about something and the prick is refusing to sing sea shanties when going downwind.  Apparently he finds the practice out-dated.

Surely sailing is far too middle-class for our new Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition.

But imagine, if he did sail a Laser he'd still be insisting we all use 3:1 standard kickers (no cheating and making it 4:1), a 2:1 cunningham and a wooden tiller fitted with a metal UJ  - because that's all the sun-bleached knocker sitting trolley-less and scratched on a beach in somewhere god-forsaken, would have.

Oh, and the State would own all the boats. New designs would have to have a government permit, only obtainable by party-members and only then after a massive kickback to the head of the People's Yachting Union.

But my bet is that, if Jeremy did actually dinghy sail, it would be in a proper red-topped (Daily) Mirror - with a gaff and the jib sheeted out on the gunwale as Jack Holt originally intended.

The Finn was a favourite class in the old Soviet Union...

But in any case Mr Corbyn is as middle class as they come isn't he?

Did I read he was a public schoolboy? In which case he would team race Fireflies, which, oddly, is about as socialist as sailing gets.
