At the Dinghy Show, I asked on the Minorca Sailing stand how their punters were liking the Aero, and got a surprise.

The reply showed little enthusiasm for the Aero: in general, people still preferred the Laser.  They found the wide decks of the Laser made it easier to find a convenient seat downwind, they preferred its style of stability (maybe its slower reactions in roll?) and relative ease of righting.

Clearly Minorca punters don't have the same jaundiced view of the Laser as Forumites ...

That could be, I definitely found it difficult to settle upwind, it's not a patch on the Solution or the Zero at my weight.

Keep an eye on the reborn Rondar 'Icon' - different name and a kite, its going to be interesting. Maybe Mike will give us a little update on a new thread.

The aero grows on you the more you sail it.

Glad you like it Lionel, I reckon there'll be a Tasaresque Aero 2 along soon!

Blimey, 5.5hrs and still no riposte from Jeffers on this topic that's in danger of becoming a proper luv in! Just brace yourselves for liberal accusations of fanboyism.

Thanks to LDC we had two Aeros on demo during the Thornbury SC Club Week in addition to the Aero that a member purchased a few months ago. Everyone who had a go thoroughly enjoyed the boat, and many have said they may well procure one when funds allow.

Interestingly different people had different views on the way the boat behaves.
Personally my view is that the boat finds an easy groove upwind but I struggled downwind to find a comfortable position from which I could react when the inevitable roll to windward occurs. As a result I suffered several swims. I have only sailed with the 7 rig.
Several younger and lighter lads took the Aero 7 out and had the opposite view, finding it a challenge to keep moving in a chop upwind without the bow getting pushed off the wind, so I conclude that either different sailing styles or an extra 15kg makes a significant difference to how the boat sails upwind.
In Aero 5 mode one of our clubs Oppie sailors found it manageable and enjoyed the experience but clearly to be competitive needs to be a bit bigger while one of the young women at the club really got the rig working well and was able to stay inbetween the RS200s and the Graduates when the breeze filled in.

Initially I was not a big fan of the boat when it was launched but that was possibly due to my cynicism of the marketing guff, but I am now firmly of the opinion that its a great boat, I just need to find a way to sit downwind to enable some reactivity if needed.

So far there aren’t too many Aeros in Cornwall, but I have had the chance to sail against 2 over the last 3 weeks.  One was an Aero9 in Falmouth dinghy week and the other an Aero7 at Roadford Lake.  In both cases I was sailing my trusty Tasar.  Roadford Lake this last weekend gave me a much better chance to see one perform and I must say I was quite impressed with the boat.  The owner had bought it new this year after sailing a Vareo for 10 years.  He claimed it was a big improvement and a much better boat for handling than the Vareo.  We had a mixture of breezes over the weekend, ranging from a drifter to 12-15 knots.  I was impressed with how well the Aero sailed.  It pointed almost as high as the Tasar, slower on the only occasion we had a close reach and very similar speed dead down wind.  Its gunhales and very light weight made it very easy to lift out of the water.  The race results have not been published on the Roadford site yet, but after an 8 race series with one discard we finished equal on points.  Only our better results gave us the higher position.  In conclusion I would say it is a brilliant boat and the fact that you can buy a rig to suit your personal size and weight and interchange rig sizes if rich enough make it as flexible as the Laser range.  Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to see a D-zero in action so couldn't comment about the differences.

Vanity, pure vanity.

sort of, but it also has kudos in some classes where they are linked to world ranking.

I find it also helps to keep internet passwords memorable; but I guess a decent security protocol would advocate against PSNs and for an added measure, changing your boat more often too.  LOL
