We seem to have invested in a secondhand electric loud hailer (£25). I however will continue to shout down the dunce'es cap. Extravagance!

New press release.

Today the members of Bewl Valley Sailing Club have held an extraordinary general meeting at which there has been a positive discussion about the current position and future prospects for the club.

The clubhouse was standing room only demonstrating the level of interest and
commitment of the membership to the future of the club. Bewl Valley Sailing Club provides an amazing facility enjoyed by many, including Families, Schools, Youth, Competitive Sailors, and not to forget Mariners of Bewl which provides opportunities for disabled sailors. We do not want to see the club close or go
into administration.
The members have shown unanimous support for the actions taken to date and given the flag officers and main committee a mandate to secure the future of our club.
The members also showed overwhelming support to improve the volunteering ethos of the club.
The club would like to correct today’s news reports and state the landlord is not looking to increase the rent, but that the club can no longer afford the rent payments it had previously agreed to and are looking to find a mutually workable restructuring of terms with the landlord.

The Flag Officers will therefore engage in further discussions with appropriate parties and a further statement will be issued in due course.

While there's certainly some truth in all that, the country is full of much smaller clubs, with a much smaller pool of talent to draw on that manage OK. I was closely involved with all of those issues for some years at my previous club and we managed well with a fairly typical small town set of volunteers to draw on. For a club that has decided to go down a semi commercial route, with paid staff and manager, and to sign a lease for £160k pa it would seem extremely foolish, and pretty unforgivable - if what's happened is really that they lacked the expertise to understand what they were doing.

maybe they were shamed by the actions of their committee?

don't forget, BWB bought a salient business with a salient sub-tennent structure.  It's not their fault that a 1200 member strong sailing club has lost a significant proportion of that and became insolvent as a result.

Interesting reading, seems like there is a right row going on and blame being thrown in both directions.
Where is £160k annual rent inline with?
Are there any clubs paying that?

In my eyes if by excessively escalating the rent you turn a viable club into an non-viable one then that is your fault.

it's not excessive if the landlord can go on to demonstrate that is the market rate, or indeed it's the rate at which a return is needed to make the space viable.... this is private business, not a public service after all.

Besides their statement reads that were prepared to negotiate, but the club essentially wanted to strip the rent away completely for 12 months, then return to a net contribution of £10k.... that's not a proposal, it's an insult and frankly it sounds like the club ran itself into the ground.

The first thing you check is wether you have any chartered surveyors amongst your membership that can represent you at 'mates rates' then you need to read the lease you have and check very carefully all the clauses of the new lease you are being offered.

It's a veritable minefield leases, so you really are best served getting a professional you really trust to help you and given he's a so called professional, don't trust him as far as you can throw him across a room. Wink

That may be true, but volunteer members of a sailing club committee are rarely geared or indeed savvy enough to deal with a commercial organisation in this day and age, witness the entire industry that supports sailing, they haven't even caught up with Thatchers bully boy eighties. Talk about knives to a gunfight.
