Thanks caveman. Sounds a bit like Greece!
I thought the VC's letter was excellent - eloquent and pragmatic.

What a cynical attitude Kneewrecker. Sounds like you don't like small, private, friendly clubs! We had 19 boats out racing last night for good natured menagerie fun. What's wrong with duties and personal involvement? Who does it matter who cleans the bogs? As it happens I do, cleaning for money because I have time and live close. On Sundays we have an 'assistant officer' who provides tea and cake. This duty is not gender specific!

It's not cynical, it's just a personal view on what I want out of my sailing. On here are others I know whom if a large stretch of water or open sea were the only option, then they too would probably up their cadence in favour of changing the type of sailing they do. I respect that. There's also nothing 'wrong' with duties and involvement- but it's not for me, not right now, and quite possibly not in the future either. My free time is too precious and I'm not giving up time with my family to scrub bogs and serve tea and cake. They are things I'm happy to contribute and pay for- if a club member wants the gig for a little extra cash then great, he or she should be given first dibs...

Thanks Caveman - sounds like it's a former committee error losing touch with their members, and has nothing to do with the Landlord / fat cat capitalist pig.

Posts on this forum are often of very low quality. The quality of the debate on this subject has been extraordinarily good - well researched, informative, thoughtful and without rancour.  Well done, people - keep it up!

All well and good, but 160,000 p.a. for one building in a shared environment is still ludicrous and certainly not a commercially sound rent, nor probably have the rates been negotiated in line with current assumptions that rates were overly high due to the peak of the rateable values 'bubble' of 2007-8 yr in the South East.
Cavemans post makes sense and follows the trend in almost all of sailing from the RYA and it's previously all volunteer committees down. Once we enter the territory of jobsworths, we get 9-5 service and a reluctance from the rest of us to do what clubs have to do to be successful. I keep reiterating it to our lot, 'Club' means a group of people 'clubbing' together for their own mutual enjoyment, it doesn't mean some taking whilst others constantly give. Never the less that is always the way, but at least if nobody is paid then the resentment doesn't quite have the same grounds.

There was a mass exodus of the Solo fleet from Bewl recently, it would be interesting to hear the politics of that, anyone got any intel they'd be permitted to broadcast from the Solo forum without risking being shot or worse?

Woodburner, there's really no juicy detail on politics to air.  I think you have already grasped the key details. The issues were:

1. Unreliability of water levels during drought years;
2. A perception that racing was not given the priority it deserved (the solos are only really about racing);
3. Concerns about the "professionalisation" of the club.
4. Concerns about club finances (which was partly down to the rent it paid).
5. Cost of membership.

It would be wrong to blame individuals but hopefully others will learn from what happened. I would say promote and guard and your club's volunteering ethos no matter what size it is, always keep a firm lid on costs, address financial issues as soon as they arise and, if you have to negotiate a rent review or lease renewal with your landlord, employ a specialist chartered surveyor (unless you are getting a concessionary rent).

Thank you for young Fuller for 'Club means a group of people 'clubbing' together for their own enjoyment'.

At Cardiff recently there was no catering on the Sunday during their annual regatta because, "It was not commercially viable for the caterers".  WHAT !!!! Give me small clubs with tea and cake.

If 'clubs' treat themselves as commercial organisations then they should not be surprised if the outside World treats them as such.

At my club we have a tea urn and you help yourself, the OOD brings the milk. If you want food then you bring a packed lunch, or if you're feeling super generous/it's your birthday you bring in a cake! Sorted.
Needs to sail more...
