From the Bewl website "£217 - A craft fee is payable for each craft that you wish to sail at Bewl, even if you don’t keep the craft at Bewl."

Ouch.

read it again Tom- second boats are £100 extra, Tera/Optimists only £70....


For comparison, my individual membership at Draycote including a board fee is £480 per annum.  The same package at Bewl would have been £477 per annum.  

 I get good value out of my membership, (it's the same price as my wife's municipal gym membership), although I accept that a lot of dinghy sailors deem it 'expensive'.

That seems like a similar rate to Grafham which is a larger than both IIRC.

At Hunts I pay around 1/3rd of that for family membership with 2 boats. If Hunts closed I would almostcertainly stop sailing. Not because I could not afford it but because I could not justify spending around £500/year just on the club fees.

It does seem to be the bigger clubs that are struggling more at the moment though.

it comes down to value judgements and where we each individual choose to spend our money..... at the end of the day £500 per year is less than the depreciation on your old boat, only time will tell for the new one.   And to de-personalise it (as that was a cheap shot admittedly), it's a sh*t load less than the fuel, eating out, accommodation, boat maintenance and entry fees attending a few circuit events and championships.....

I'd agree though, big 'dinghy clubs' do seem to struggle with the hand they've been dealt.  I'm not sure the really big clubs with yachts, powerboats and marinas etc would say they're struggling.... some still have waiting lists iirc.

Hmmm I made a profit on the laser boat I owned  Wink

Agree on the fuel, accom and fees but that I can justify. Nowt as queer as folk as some might say...

The point I'm getting at is that you pay a berth fee even if you bring the boat on a trailer each weekend to sail it!

... that's not 'abnormal' for inland clubs is it?  (although I found it weird at first!)

It helps break the fee down into bite size pieces for the boatless crews.

Not sure where the majority of sailors at Bewl hail from. I know we have a few over at Weir Wood now and again. Our commodore just sent an email out to all our members apprising them of the situation there. They could end up at Bough Beech or Weir Wood I suppose should they so wish. They'd get a warm welcome.
I am quite surprised at the situation. Tough times seemingly.....

Think it may actually cover the water access fee, and is not really just a berthing charge at all, although it does give you a boat park space.

We have this at Hunts. We call it a sailing fee. Berthing at the club is free as long as there is space (we currently have a waiting list for berths).

This is because part of lease means we pay per boat sailed at the club rather than boats kept at the club so the club has to charge accordingly.
