You are good at it Tom and I posted a load of suggestions and lost the lot to the yellow screen, some that I can still remember (my brain is a bit like that flashes of inspiration that then get forgotten almost as quick, hence the need to write stuff down).. Large block mounts, sell well, but need displaying so the odd freebie with your business name left at clubs you visit to inspire those you photograph to order big wall mounts for their home or office. The ridiculous sums folk pay for prints and tat in places like the Range (a new store that's opened here that plebs visit at the weekend to buy any old crap), would be better placed spent with you. When you're not on the water, Pets is another area folk pay good money for and just requires patience to capture the moggie or pooch in a good light, horses and their riders at Gymkhanas but you'll probably have similar problems with rights. Do a deal with beauty salons install some portrait lamps (good up lighter to do away with the wrinkle shadows)and soft focus or vaseline the lens then offer some makeover shots as part of their package. Then of course kids & weddings... none of which is exciting, but it's the bread and butter end of the trade if you need to live off it to supplement your sports photography. A couple of mates have recently got their license to operate drones commercially but I fear this area, currently being 'on trend' will become saturated very quickly and not worth the time and money getting approval. There are lots of other specialist areas, like 360 product views for web display you'll need the software, but all around you there's a requirement, just think about it.. So good luck and I hope you're well and truly on the mend.

On another note, particularly following our scribe friends recent suggestion on the Solution thread that this forum is down to a dozen folk because we've scared the rest away. I'd have to say that's not at all the case, it's true there are not many posting, but I've been monitoring the hits that come to my website from that little link down there v and there are anywhere between fifty and one hundred hits a day from it, I don't want to embarrass myself as to the number of cheap bike helmets and deck pads I've cleared thanks to forums, so don't ignore this place as a means of promotion secondary to the banter.
However the rate does drop when there is nothing either controversial or argumentative going on. Discussion, even heated discussion is what fuels forums, it's without it they die, so wether you call them trolls or other names, without them the place quickly becomes boring and the hits fall off and folk cease to stay up late complaining there is somebody 'wrong' on the internet to disagree with.

ON which point? a) That everyone's gone b) That heated discussion isn't good for forums c) That it's all my/ Jimbo/ Russco's fault Be honest now, I'm certainly not going to be offended, because I'm an anonymous entity and it is 'only' the internet.

Several points (if I may join in) Train crash Syndrome: Everyone wants to watch but no one wants to be in it....so plenty of lurkers but not many participants. Controversy and argument: Fine, naught wrong with it BUT name calling and personal abuse does frighten folk off. Trying to disguise the intent with pseudo humour doesn't wash with most folk either. Being prepared to argue a point if necessary is healthy....always arguing a point and conceding nothing is just plain irritating and convinces folk that there is absolutely no point in joining in. .....and perhaps more importantly: Internet Forums for most (all?) interest groups are in severe decline. They are now a thing of the past. People used to contribute for two main reasons, 1 to get information, 2 to socialise. Information is easier (less uncomfortable) to get elsewhere, the only entity you have to ask is Google and google won't call you a muppet. Socialising is easier to do elsewhere and if someone tries to humiliate you or does something else you don't like, you can "unfriend" them. Times have changed. |

On topic now:
I generally don't like the photos I've seen of me sailing. There's always the self critical demon in my head saying "you're not upright", "You're hiking tech is appalling" or "you're trim is bad" It would have to be an exceptionally good pic for me to buy it, not seen one yet. |

Its funny becasue most of the personal insults have been chucked towards Graeme, myself or Jimbo. Not the other way around.

I'd agree with all of that, and whilst it's true most 'posters' now do so elsewhere, there is so much choice, it doesn't stop folk coming here to browse. Now, newcomers if they are not put off by the post count delineation are generally well received, they don't know one another off the board so are less likely to attack, humiliate (how can an anonymous ID be humiliated) or abuse others. However the point I'm making is 'regulars' don't actually have any real value in commercial 'click' terms unless they provide content, so what needs to happen if some are discouraged from being here for whatever reasons, then the others should step into the void or the whole thing would very soon drop off. Which as the others have pointed out, seldom happens.

Running/cycling/triathlon/"adventure running" seems to now have a photo business model where a company deploys a number of photographers to sit in one place and take more or less the same photo of every "competitor". Generally helped by having mandatory numbers on body (running) or helmet/bike/back (cycling) that can then be easily OCR-ed to simply produce "packages" of photos to be sold- prices seem to vary a lot though with some operators selling two or three photos for the price others would chuck in 20+ (with little quality control).
Can't really be done with sailing- costs rather more to get a photographer in position and much harder to get a decent shot when the photographer is moving too and the competitors are much less predictable in movements. I do wonder what the demand (not sales, because current price structures may hide demand) for fancy prints versus a few photos to chuck on facebook and a desktop background is. The latter would work better at lower cost-per-photo but probably doesn't in the main need as high quality (both composition and resolution). |
