Don't know enough about off boom sheeting to comment with any authority, but from the little I've seen it seems to work better on open water than small lakes.
2:1 at the back seems a good idea, get the purchase where it does the most good.Don't most boats that use a rear bridle use 2;1 ? |

I don't want more i wanted less (purchase), more direct as noted in that post I've just written, when you pump the sail, not so necessary inland I agree, but on the sea when you're sheeting in and out a lot...

It was 2:1 previously we (look further back at the Solo mans post) are experimenting with just one purchase at the back and a second one at the front, the next step will be to do away with the back bridle entirely or maybe come up with a traveller rather than bridle, the boat is very sensitive to over sheeting, something I also confirmed last night punching tide.

Well have it 1:1 all the way through then. Why the extra block at the front? You can them simply make it 2:1 at the back on a windy day if you need to..... This is how a certain person sailed my Zero in the really light stuff and did pretty well by all accounts....

The extra block is the old one, it's riveted into place can't get it off without drilling the rivets, another annoying dinghy trait, who the f**k still uses rivets these days in fact who in their right mind would spec an alloy mast and boom period, a complete trashing of a nice boat. Good boat - crap rig.

I have seen Andy Couch take purchase out of his main-sheet on his Phantom in-between races! I am guessing so he can trim the sail much quicker in the lighter stuff. Graeme whats wrong with the standard setup? You should try and learn to get used to it, especially as you scored a bullet in your first race in the boat. Then when you have sailed it for a few months you may either learn to liek it or understand what you want to change. At the moment it seems you are hampering your ability to learn how to sail the boat quickly. Personally I would steer clear of off the boom sheeting on a dinghy like the solution. i only really like it on boats like 14's where you are controlling the main from body height rather than having your arm above your head to sheet all the time. The 300's now use it however they sit high on the wings so i can see how it would work. I like some form of transom sheeting, we still get plenty of feel in the zero. However if the rules allowed it i would fit a gybing strop which would possibly help you 'Pump# the sail through gybes and make things a little easier to handle in the stronger gustier stuff.

It's all back there ^ in essence I hate rear bridles, they either engage with the wiggle stick (in double handers) or in this case the bridle drops over the rear quarter and can't be disengaged without going back there and I sail it from the front. I'm convinced the whole rear bridle thing, like off boom sheeting & gnavs is just one of those fads that periodically come along and 'they' (folk who try to flog us stuff) tell you it's a must have. Although quite how 'they' have managed to keep you poor saps using ally masts for so long is beyond me..

I meant the one on the tower mate not the one on the boom. I can see why that one is there....

The one actually on the Tower is the mainsheet block, the one I've added is on the end of the lollipop stick which replaces the purchase that you give up by not having it at the back, so the rope goes along the boom to the back direct, no real purchase there, just one 45 degree through the boom end, there is now a double block at the boom and one floating lollipop, so I could do away with the rope going back, return it to the tower and I think I'm correct in assuming I'd have the same number of purchases, but the boom leverage will probably feel greater, because you don't have the moment of the pulley at the rear which is really what's giving you the light feel. Plus less rope to fiddle with, something else I hate about dinghy sailing, all this bloody rope that gets everywhere other than where it is supposed to be, why aren't there self coiling drums to roll up what you're not using?

Give it a try. I think you will find it does not work as well as the rear bridle though (which we all know you hate).....
