It's a bit like release on compassionate grounds rather than 'parole'.

People go to open events for all sorts of reasons. I know a number of people who just want to race all the time and they turn up at open meetings whatever the conditions and race. It is away of life. Very bad for relationships however.  Others have specific aims in Inland or National Championships. One needs to be very committed to do traveler circuits, championships and the odd extra event like Sailfest. I spectate and offer assistance to 'The former Boy' and our little Byte team. This weekend I may visit Carsington to watch 505, Javelin and Hornet, my very good friends the Brothers Reid are in with a chance of winning the Jav's in their Nationals. I can pretty much do what I like as I have been married for forty odd years and am on parole.

It means that race attendances will be restricted to single people, the sad or the elderly. I think this matters much more than PY problems.

I think it's more the fragmented thing and whatever you think, the farce that is the yardstick system contributes to that.
It's not the only factor, but it's one that has almost certainly prevented me travelling any further afield than round here, seriously why would you?

As to that event, it has all the attributes that could be very attractive, but is missing some 'Magic' lets face it having an Insurance company as a lead sponsor really sets the imagination afire - not.

I don't know what other folk like to look forward to at events, with class events it's obviously hooking up with old pals and racing, but with 'open' events there needs to be something else as well to create that 'pull effect'. What draws me to the things I do go to, Dinghy Shows, Boat Shows, Round Island Challenges, it's either hoping to see something new or a bit of adventure, now as it happens and I'm now already disposed of now, the breadknife has her claws into me as penance for last weekends open meeting, but with the D Zeroati turning up there, had I spotted that and I could have rounded up some of our local SODS (Solution One Design Sailors  Wink) I'm sure we'd have got on like a house on fire after the event, we could even have the ram the beach challenge to see who can get the boat the furthest up the shingle.. Wink

Firstly I have great respect for Simon and Brenda....but..... It is a great idea and could have been fun, in fact it was in the first year with the added excitement of sailing at Weymouth but the courses were very tough for small boats at Calshot ant the entry too small to create a buzz. It also is a bleak places in my opinion.

Rutland's an interesting venue - I don't dislike the Sailing Club side at all, I've always enjoyed the events I've been to, but I couldn't believe how nice it was around by Whitwell where you can 'pay and play' in dinghies, kayaks and windsurfers.  It feels like a mini-euro lake set up if the weather is nice and I had some great sailing there last year.  I could imagine it would actually make quite a good location for a watersports festival.

Yes Gordon I agree a good event. Not just for the sailing. I am not sure if poor Ben has recovered from the ribbing he took yet.. LOL

Fair point. I see what you mean. It was good this year.  I think the other thing in relation to Sailfest is for me the venue just is not appealing. With two of us sailing and my better half coming along who only just tolerates boats, she does not deserve being marooned on a spit in the Solent for the weekend.
And for those who do not really appreciate boats it really seems isolated. We are off to Rutland not as a choice against it but good venue, boy can sail and meeting my buddy with the 505 who has to travel from Yokshire. So you can see the reasoning. SWMBO can run, cycle, relax on campsite,................cook Thumbs Up

My reason for citing POSH, is that from an external perspective it looked like a good well supported event - combining the best of class racing with a broader number of overall competitors.

IMHO - it's one of those events you read about and wish you could have been there.

Hi Puddle
I think it had to be postponed from the original date last year due to bad weather, so later date showed reduced numbers.
Its a good warm up event for single handers 6 races over 2 days and drinking far to much in the club bar on Saturday night! It all needs practice.
