I found that in variable lighter wind you could adjust twist on main with the traveler. This allowed easier change of gear. It also allowed you to gain even more leech tension when it was windy, and lock the boom on the quarter like many of the more traditional single handers, this forces you to foot off a bit which the boat really likes. Always left me giggling sailing through the lee of a laser. If you get this boat going, the old 1066 handicap was about right against most boats. Though the Great Lakes laser handicap change left it very challenging against them, though my overall position is about the same since I swapped to the dark side, but laser is slower as harder to depower. Another foot of length and we would not have seen the more recent products.

Well I've just had the best wednesday afternoon series race ever and got the first bullet down that lake, well the first without having some lame personal handicap at least and not in particularly light wind I'd have been slaughtered in the EPS. It was proper nip and tuck, mainly with a Laser, the lead swapped 4 or 5 times, all on shifts and water calls brilliant but irritating not to be able to shake him at least not til the very end when he did something stupid.
I had a very slight edge upwind, stuffing it funnily enough, the Solution does point well if necessary but it does prefer to be a little free. Laser had it on the downwind legs that were really deep, we were about even on a broadish 110 degree or thereabouts reach then for a tight reach just out of the island I felt the Solution had an edge. This was the first time I'd used the newly acquired 2nd hand boat I'd bought, the demo boat is going back and frankly this one went better, it has been pretty well sorted by its previous owner, Dougal from here, other than the rope getting caught around the back a few times, everything worked, the centreboard coming up saved my arse a couple of times and gave me the inside line around crap island where i usually run aground much to everyones mirth. Funny the first time i saw this boat I thought then how right it looked, it just goes to show, then all that fascination with kites got in the way, I'm over that for lake use, but I certainly miss one on the sea. I wonder how this will work on the sea with longer legs, it might even be faster than a laser by a bigger margin, closed water 30 second and minute duration tacks are all about it's ability to transition without losing too much speed which it is good at, a bloody joy, if only i can master this rope swap without a jam cleat to drop it into and stop using my teeth.

Can't be a bad boat dougal step in it and win for the first time out, that or it's now a bandit, but I race this guy all the time on this lake and tbh he beats me more than I do him and in the EPS if I do beat him it has to be by such a margin it becomes a bit boring in a love it hate it kind of way, it's nice to be free and clear but not so nice when you find you were not free and clear enough, so racing pretty much scratch against Lasers puts this boat right in the mix, both on the lake and on the sea with our increasing Laser Fleet. Not sure how many seconds 1 pt is difference but it managed 17 secs on corrected apparently and in the sort of wind that would normally favour him, so I'm well made up with it and everything works, no slippy rope more footstraps than the demo boat, the centreboard is packed out so doesn't move unless pushed, there's a handy tape guide on the forestay so you can see how far you're raking the rig, I liked that (I've fitted a rope to constrain it to what I think will be the maximum ever,) I'm going to fit a traveller on the back so it doesn't keep catching the stern quarter.
I'm wondering about fitting a proper track to that back metal bit across the stern what do folk think about that?

Wouldn't bother. Extra cost for little gain. Use rope and a block, much easier to put on as well

Was going to be my question exactly, also I just wouldn't bother as used to have metal track on a cat and was quite temperamental. Just stick with rope and block is probably best.

Good point ![]() Or the route the wiggle thing under the bar, in fact I did have this moment of clarity when I considered routing the entire control system down the wiggle stick so all the controls were at your finger tips so to speak. That aside that original gizmo that Dan had on the Punk and the centre below deck routing always amazed me, that's what I really want and tbh was what attracted me to it, then they didn't run with it on the D Zero so made it easier to go without.

I agree, I loved the idea of the under floor sheeting in the Punk. I assume they either decided it was too unusual to sell well, or there was too much friction.

Think it was for a multiple of reasons, friction, complexity plus i guess on a production boat it adds to the cost. Could you run a tight aft rope traveller system like the Zero Graeme? I am happy to take some photos for you . Should be relatively cheap to convert.
