Talk about fickleness of the forum.
Last week Mike was being given grief for promoting Blazes; Fire, not too heavy, reduced sail area, good leverage. This week, come on Keith tell us all about your latest development. Now don't me wrong, I'm lovin' hearing from both and any other designer / builder.  Just saying that's all.  |

Looking at the pictures of the boat the central bouyancy tank looks like it could be a bit of an obstacle to negotiate when tacking and gybing, or is that not the case?

Hello The Moo, the idea behind the central buoyancy tank is that it allows the boat to float lower in the water when capsized to let those older sailors among us get onto the center board easier. As far as getting in the way in tacks and gybes, I can honestly say , no, it doesn't inhibit. If one rolls the boat to maneuver its hardly even noticeable. As Keith says, its also another handy seat. The Solo has a wide center board case top/ toe hold system and no one seems to experience problems with that either. I reckon like a lot of things it is down to technique.

I think they do actually, I've heard a few grumbles about it before, but it seems to be one of those tolerated compromises that comes with an otherwise great boat and great racing. You are right of course- vaulting it is all about technique, and yes, it does provide secondary functionality for perching when its really light and sh*te too.

Not clear how many Hadrons exist but will the introduction of a lighter Hadron 2 somewhat grandfather the earlier boats?

Now there is a question. Only time will tell. I will say this though, due to Keith's design and Simon's build I have exactly the boat I want. The fact it is made of wood is immaterial to me, it has been treated correctly and will last me a goodly length of time, perhaps even longer than I will be sailing. It is also very pretty, a delight to look at, attracting admiring looks and comments whenever I sail it. I am sailing a powerful single handed dinghy and not wrecking myself into the bargain. All targets met, boxes ticked, job done.

How does the water drain back out after a capsize? Those infernal self baler things?

Umm, looks like it. I really don't think I could go back to sailing a non-self-draining boat. I wonder if the MKII version will be a self drainer? |
