I find its the kneeling in the bottom on long down wind legs in lightish airs that kills my knees in the Phantom, rather than the sitting out. If the shape of the Hadron avoids this, its extra width for the same rig size ought to make upwind a bit easier too and as the boom looks a bit higher to get under it sounds like it could be my perfect next boat.

And therein lies the beauty of the Hadron. Mine has a centre thwart kindly fitted by Simon Hipkin. There is no need to kneel on the floor now, but sit astride. Last night was a perfect example, v. light winds, longish down wind leg, NO kneeling. This morning, minimal aches and pains and I am very race rusty. Well done Keith and Simon, I am looking forward to the new version.

Craiggo, I can only agree with you. One cannot avoid the fact that a hiking dinghy requires that the crew hike. I am no sports physiotherapist but as a dinghy designer since 1965 and a top dinghy crew in Merlin Rockets (in my youth!) I can develop an ergonomic 'bent knee' sitting out position which is as comfortable and convenient as it can be. That is one reason why Hadron has a good depth in the hull. Knowledgeable sources suggest that the 'straight leg' sitting out position, as required in the Laser, for example, puts less stress on the knees, but it kills the lower back instead.

NeilB, as GuessWho says - no need to kneel in a Hadron. Not only is there a thwart, but the central buoyancy tank is a convenient seat too.
The 1.95m beam gives a fair amount of sitting out power, so, as you rightly surmise, you have less pain for the same gain.
Because the Hadron2 is much lighter, we are reducing the sail area by 10% (subject to development tests) so again there will be less heeling force. Boom clearance is 1050mm above the floor, increasing further aft (the boom is angled up). I think that a Phantom with no double bottom has a boom clearance of about 925mm.

Keith - when the time suits, please keep us on the forum updated on the new developments, as hinted at, take 'feedback' with a pinch of salt, I think the pop-pschye term would be emotionally disengage, but there are plenty on here who read and might not comment, who one day may look at a Hadron and say 'you know what, why not?'

The examples I've seen photos of make it look a lovely boat.

the vibe I get is that it doesn't concern itself too heavily with conventional class development.

There's a great thread on SA about the Machete Int Canoe - sure, a canoe and homebuild kit isn't for everyone, however the posts by Dave Clark make for a very refreshing approach to product design and marketing:

Turnturtle, point taken regarding 'feedback'. I will certainly attempt to publicise our progress with the development this summer. But at this stage it's too early to be revealing too much detail. However, if you are interested, PM me with your email address and I will send you some info about Hadron2 which is not yet in the public domain.

Personally I think there's a market for a much simpler product.

Someone just needs to market an adjustable width clip on thwart/seat that fits all classes, preferably made in some light material like not wood.

Thanks Keith - I'm not in the market, so happy to wait until your plans hit public domain with everyone else.

I admire the lines of the boat and respect the ethos under which its owners and those who have sailed them seem to have embraced.

Best of luck.
