Assuming no trapeze, then downwind a lot of boats have some kneeling and if you are sitting on your legs any physio will tell you thats dreadful for your knees so the best boats are the ones you don't have to kneel on the floor with.
The aero has a very good hiking position, knees are standing up very well, but thighs made to work. Whilst you have to hike asymmetric, at least you lose the kneeling. Two people who have had knee opps recently have bought K1's so we will see how that goes. For me however the D-One is by far the most knee friendly singlehander. After sailing one three times there was never even a twinge next day. Even in the very light you can crouch with your backside half on the front support of the wing. Super comfortable boat all round although it is a physical boat as the kite is quite big to get up and down and you are required to swim....especially at the start.

For taking care of knees and hips...the Hadron by a long chalk. When the new boat comes out this summer with a built in thwart, you'll be able to throw away the knee pads too....

JJ boats deep cockpit Phantom. you can sit on the edge of the well downwind and gives you more room tacking.
Not slow either as one has been second at the last two nationals. Have a look on his website. |

you've got one backer on that one. The Solo really was a very comfortable boat to sit out on imho. (I had Winder Mk 2 so can't comment on some of the older ones)

And presumably because you have the kite, you get to stay sat on the edge offwind unlike monosailers having to kneel in the scuppers downwind.
That was going to be one of my features in the V3 not having to kneel ever.

D-One by a mile, by far and away the most comfortable hiking boat I have ever sailed, and I've sailed quite a lot over the years.

That can't be a very efficient way of cycling...

Has to be the Solo. I know I'll get shot down in flames for making such a suggestion, but here goes.
I've sailed most of the popular single handers suitable to my weight (75kg), a good modern Solo with fully adjustable toe straps is far and away the best for knees. I can sail straight legged for as long as the quads will take it, then adjust the straps and bent legged for a bit, then back to straight legged.
The thing a lot of people don't acknowledge with dinghies and knees is that a lot of the problem comes from kneeling and moving around on your knees down wind. Again the Solo is far better as there's always somewhere to sit, side deck, centreboard case top or thwart.
As for trapeze boats, fine if the conditions are right (upwind in a Contender in a force 4 has to be one of the nicest sensations in dinghy sailing) but horrible in marginal conditions, in and out all the time and basically squatting on the gunwale. Again there's the downwind problem (I've owned a vortex and a Contender, both terrible for the knees downwind).
Cycling helps a lot as a general form of exercise, seems to work on just the right muscles.
