The introduction makes it crystal clear that it is one class with three rigs, rather than three seperate classes. Rule C1.3 and 1.4 are a piss take for April Fools Day surely?

Its different in different clubs.  Some clubs, you change rigs then you change class and as such you score a different entry in the series. Others they allow you to race off the original rig handicap.

The difference it makes is if its 3 classes you have 3 py numbers, if you allow rig swapping, you will have 1 py number.  Which will be significantly reduced as you can chose your sail to suit the conditions.  We have been down this conversation in the rig swapping thread.

Was it 're-writing the playbook' or 'rewriting the rule book'??  I cant remember

As I read those rules, it is one class with one PY for general handicap races.

If, however, there was an RSAero event, organised by the class association, with different rig sizes entered then that event could be run using the handicaps mentioned in the rules. What they get up to in the comfort of their own home, I don't care. But for general club racing the rules state it is one class, so just the one PY.

Ignoring all the other bits which will take up pages here....

In the event of one or more rig sizes racing together the results
shall be determined based on the Portsmouth Yardstick system with
ratings as follows -
RS Aero 9 – 1035
RS Aero 7 – 1065
RS Aero 5 – 1102

Re the above, should it not read suggested yardsticks, and the actual PY to be used is to be decided by the organising authority? Or something similar.

i think its fair enough to keep a full rig laser/aero at that py for the whole series regardless of what sail they use, but to give someone who regularly/only sails a 4.7/aero5 the full rig py is wrong. thus 3 seperate classes seems the fair way to go. i think we get the option at our club to either have seperate entries or if u use smaller rigs for a windy day its all on the large rig py. still no clarification if this is how lasers are officially treated?

Roger, AIUI those numbers are the numbers to use at class events - somewhat confusingly racing handicap at single class events. They are not the number (for there should be only one) to be used in general open racing, which the RYA will, in the fullness of time, be responsible for calculating/suggesting.

Officially the Laser situation is quite straightforward - there are 3 classes, 4.7, radial and standard (or even 4 if you count the 8.1 unofficially). You can't change your rig as you change class by doing so. Unofficially, of course, the situation is more complex and varies a lot from club to club, and within clubs.

Em - officially the Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 are three separate ISAF classes.

They have three separate PY recommendations from the RYA as per the list.

Whether your club allows switching of rigs across a series, and how they managed that process and the PY allocation is down to your club.  Some clubs allow it, some clubs don't.  Some let you and then issue the relevant handicap (and assumes we all have the good grace to sign on properly), some might opt to just offer the fastest handicap.  It's a decision for each and every club.  On the one hand allowing it enables that boat to get on the water when maybe they otherwise wouldn't launch, but the flip side is, it can create animosity amongst others who may perceive it be cheating.

Strictly speaking- imho - sailing a Laser one week, then swapping it out for a Radial the next is no different to a guy or girl who sails a Phantom one week and a Solo the next.  I don't have a problem people entering the series multiple times, especially if the usual full rig sailor gets to go out in a blow and still get a race with his old radial sail.  But I do find 'rig swapping' and expecting the results to be merged, is probably more trouble than its worth for everyone else.

I'm assuming that is just BS / the 'UJ end of the tiller extension' talk?
Anyone know anything about that?

Wasn't it discussed on here as well? BS I think, well I hope so. If I ever had one, I would want a 7 and want a separate handicap for it.

Anyway I cannot remember when I've had more fun on y&y, but am of to work now. Have fun guys and girls.

so not BS then....
