Hi Graham
In most of the groups you could pick your class to win ( dependant upon course possibly) so creating upset.
band 1 no idea on boards and kite speeds
Band 2 49er
Band 4 505
band 5 d1
band 6 not sure Halo in the light
band 7 Phantom (why is the zero not in this group)
band 8 d zero
etc

It's no different to how things are now, you can pick your class to win, Phantom if its light Blaze if its windy, stick the Fire rig on if its v windy.
Band 4 what if there is a tight reach around cans and the 5 oh can't use its monster kite.
In band 6 both the Merlin and the Fireball could win on the day as could the Contender if the course is tight and its breezy enough to wire downwind.

It's about the boat potential.

A better exercise is to scan the groups and find those that could never under any course or circumstance win, then move them down one.

Band 12 is a difficult one could a well sailed Byte beat a Europe or GP14 for example.?

But it's easy, you run it like a league and if one boat keeps winning it gets shifted up or down a group.

No returns, just arbitrary results every so often they get shifted about, new boats elect which group to enter and the same happens to them, turn up as a bandit, bang up you go into the next group.

Simples.

I also think it would probably be better to market them as 'Groups'

Group 1 Group 2 etc,

Nice boat what's it like? Oh not bad it races in group 4....

Then as a club you could run open meetings for say Group 12

Or on the sea maybe run a group 6 meeting, the results are what they come out on the day, no bollox.

Nothing to stop the Yardstick thing carrying on exactly as is, but its for the nerds and bandits, proper sailors race groups if there is no class racing available to them so you get to keep your snobbery in a declining field... Wink

Yes i got into a muddle down there and had to introduce 16, didn't want to then as always I lost interest after a phone call, came back to it and bunged it up as a work in progress so you could get where I was going with it, you lot would be better placed to shuffle them around than me and down there lots of them have classes to race anyway, so probably not as relevant, this is aimed more at us widows and orphans with no classes..

Sounds like a familiar idea, sad to think it will never gain traction isn't it?

All it would take is a bunch of us to make it happen...

If you want to test it with your home fleet (if you can't do it with them, why would anyone else listen) then great. As I suggested, run a pursuit where the groups start together, in this case with what, 2 minute gaps for most of it? Time the boats in each group and between groups to the next mark at the end of the race, though, so you can see what the spread is. At the end, give prizes for each group, and for overall winner (nice prizes, so people flock to take part). Then analyse the data and improve the groups.

I see you have hammered the Miracle... I've not been beaten on the water by one in Firefly or Lightning, so maybe a little harsh... certainly not the way to get your club on side!

LOL Wink

Truth is though they do beat the boats of that group on occasion over the water, and as I said this isn't the sailor potential its the boat potential in the hands of assumed skilled sailors, since they make up the majority of those that would travel to such an event.

I think I'm correct in thinking I've actually seen a Miracle beat a Merlin over the water and neither crews were slack Alices, one just made a mistake on the day.

I've certainly witnessed frequent punishment of Streakers and Solos by Miracles, hell they've punished me in my EPS if the weathers up and is the Graduate (I've never seen one but saw pictures of Rooster man wielding one like a weapon)not of similar vein?
