Hang on.....while I was away in three weeks of internet desert (ie none) did Woodbuggerer buy a Solution? Is he now talking from experience rather than indulging in detached speculation?

You have to go back a bit tick, but briefly the story so far, three of us tried to get a demo back in October via the class, it didn't work, so I contacted Nathan at Ovingtons and he and Chris Turner organised a demo for us via me picking up their demo boat from the show which turned out to be new, so far 6 of us have tried it and everyone likes it, one of us has bought a second hand one and two others are looking, the guys at the sea club are all eager to get a go as well, because it is such a nice boat to sail but has that fundamental thing we all crave, a retracting centreboard.
I've raced it twice in quite blustery conditions that would normally see me swimming or bringing up the rear and I'm doing quite well in it, actually racing in the mix, rather than just surviving, it's all back there^ find your glasses, this episode started around page 8.

Its all time in the boat Graham. With your centreboard lust, there are few alternatives and the solution is a smaller phantom in many ways so not a lot wrong with that.
Once you have sailed it a dozen times, you should of worked out what you need to do with positioning and rig adjustments to make it go on each point of the wind. Its amazing how different similar looking boats are to sail.
We had 7 aero 7's out yesterday in good breeze and some chop and after half a dozen sails we are all beginning to understand the boat more and how the rig works. Its often small things that make a big difference. The Supernova is a classic case. People get in them, try to sail them like a Laser and say they don't point. However once you 'get it' they certainly do point and are definitely quicker upwind than a Laser. There were a couple out for the first time yesterday and they struggled for speed, but give them some tips and a few weeks and they will soon be biting the ankles! |

Graeme, to be honest i am not surprised you are enjoying yourself and actually making a decent effort at sailing the thing.
To be honest you have gone about things in an arse about face way. Most people start out with slower, normal craft then move up into boats like the solution. If skiffs etc. take their fancy they move that direction having had a good go at learning in 'Normal' boats. Without blowing smoke up your bum, you should be able to get a sailing dinghy around a course in a reasonable manor, history tells us you have the 'Chess' side of sailing sorted or else you wouldn't of been so successful on a race board. The fact you started dinghy sailing in a Musto Skiff and have been determined not to go down the conventional route has really bent your view of what good dinghy racing is. Even the EPS is still a fairly fast boat for a small lake, the very fact that they are a dead class probably suggests its execution is not great. So now you are in a 'Normal' dinghy i think you will now see what you have been missing. All you need to do is learn where to put your feet and what makes the rig tick! Glad you seem to be enjoying it. |

Very good young Null, well said. Attempting to cling on to dashing youth is understandable, hence first boat a fast boat, but more fun can be had when we are more sedate in something that matches our level sedateness. This is why I wander about in a Lightning dreaming of cake. |

'Bent' you think I'm bent? The EPS has served me well, I've enjoyed it, but 9.4 is just a tad too big when it's blowy the small sail sucks and I don't want to miss out , I get the feeling this one I can sail in pretty much anything that everyone else can, although that guy in the streaker who's ten or twelve kilos heavier with a smaller sail demonstrated how I'm still ineffectual upwind when over powered even though I am wearing this designer waist tyre I've purposely constructed for myself out of my own flesh, sacrificing my svelte pussy magnetic attraction to the altar of dinghy performance.
