Once past the nonsense, I think TT and I are saying much the same. Sail what you like, when you like, just don't expect to get lots of pots at the dinner dance.

Cheers Russ, yep I think that's pretty low for this medium too... But again the gentleman in question has form for taking matters to a personal level when his imagination fails him. Anyway, no handbags from me, clearly over shared just a bit too much for him to reach that conclusion.... Lesson learned on my part, and quite amused to tell the truth, clearly doesn't know me as well as others here who know my 'clinical' methods for making value judgements....

I also think it's amusing to think some folks having contrary opinions on a forum constitutes some contest for winning or losing. I have a pretty low expectation that anyone would even listen to anything I've got to say, never mind 'win' such that they change their opinions.... I'm glad my 'quite conservative' opinion on this matter forms a bit of controversy.

And Rupert's right- I very much agree with his sentiment, but only to add there's no f**kin' way I'm giving up a Saturday night out to go to a sailing club 'dinner dance' to eat chicken in white wine sauce before 'bopping' to crap Tom Jones covers. 😘

Fun while it lasted though. Good way to leave this forum.
Last edit. Watch out for rule 4. Bye everyone, it's been good.

Precisely. I don't see what is so controversial or threatening about that view.

I know the social equality sh*t proves good forum fodder, but if you check my opinion you'd see we're in rough agreement... It shouldn't be allowed- different class (for clarity 'boat' not 'social') different entry.

where's the harm in that, or are you really advocating that people shouldn't be allowed to enter the series again with say a radial rig? (If it proves a real problem, reduce the discards)

Nope, I wasn't saying people should not be able to enter again with a different rig.  I was writing in reply to those who claimed that this was a simple issue, with one simple answer, and that the only answer was to allow multiple rigs.

It's very arguable that this is in fact a very complex issue. It's not as simple as saying "grow up, life's not fair" because that attitude can be used to support either side of the debate. You can say "life's unfair, bad luck if you couldn't organise a Merlin crew this weekend, or aren't strong or good enough to handle a gale under full rig" and it's just as valid as saying "life's unfair, bad luck if you can't afford the second rig needed to stay competitive."

IMHO reducing the perceived cost of the sport is the top priority so I favour no rig switching unless there's a significant penalty. IF others differ that's fine, but for them to imply that their opinion is the only valid one is something else.
