Had my first go on an Aero 9 yesterday. Really surprised how fast it goes given the lack of length and power, especially reaching and downwind. Sailed off 1015 and rather embarassingly won a club race in its first outing against some good club sailors. Suggests the PY is much closer to the Phantom then I would have expected.

Only downside for me is that it really is a small boat and unless hiked out, at 6'6", I'm very curled up in the cockpit. Was struggling a bit with leech tension, but that might simply be the fat head style of mainsail that I'm still not used to.

Anyway great boat, but difficult to ignore how much more spacious the Phantom is for people of my size.

I reckon in some conditions it's going to sail to 1015 and lower, judging by how it performs alongside my 300.  Close-reaching and fully powered up the 3 (2nd and 3rd at the Nats) 300s put distance on it - but as soon as we cracked off slightly on the next leg it was getting ominously bigger.  We did the distance upwind but again it held us on the run.

They are quick in the right sort of areas, but I still believe they will end up around 1035/1040. A well sailed blaze is still faster on a tight reach or upwind in a blow and that's at 1021.

Only just seen this.Think your a little confused from lack of food, James. Stay away from the pies and enjoy your snowboarding.

snowboarding was great... don't tell anyone, but I took two decks, but I used the same bindings.  Switched them over when the snow conditions changed.  I guess that's a bad thing according to some on here.

Anyway, Aero news.... thanks RB, great feedback and I think Simon's about right with the longer-term handicap prediction imho.

You used two boards for different conditions. Nuke

I just have no idea how you can live with yourself. I hope you declared it to all others on the same run or their egos will have been damaged.

Perhaps they all just sneered at you when you went past them..

Its as bad as a women talking about the gold standard

Did you stay away from the pies though?
I also think Simon is correct about the handicap.
I know the py committee gets bad press sometimes but I think they did the correct thing in not giving a experimental py on the limited info for the 9.
Don't think the aero 9 owners would have liked it

well if we're getting confessional... it get's worse.  They'll be on eBay this evening, replaced next year with something different, assuming we go.  No point them sitting in the garage all summer is there?

(And to satisfy Holman's curiosity - yes he does read this thread - I have worked out that buying higher end kit new at the end of the season from an EU webshop with its 50% discount sale, using it the following year and then flogging it on eBay upon my return, does actually cost less than renting rather average kit in resort, that in all likelihood has been trashed by some drunken Russian muppet or worse, a French ski-dork experimenting with the dark side on one plank).

None of the Aero classes have an EN yet. Given the 'on the water' experience over the winter though it does seem that the 9 and the D-Zero are pretty comparible in most conditions. Until the wind gets up of course and most of the 9 rigs suddenly disappear.....  Wink but we have had that discussion elsewhere already.

Think they will get en in about three months when more data comes in.
The very very limited returns they had for the 9 rated it at 999 according to Mr Barton. Think the sailracer returns rate it very close to the zero.
