Answer 1) No, he got fed up with being teased and told off about his old boat that he couldn't stand it, and gave up sailing as soon as he could

Answer 2) Yes, by sailing an old boat and doing well, he was able to survive the transition from bank of mum and dad to the real world of sailing whatever you can afford.

I'm beginning to think I should persuade the RYA to give me an over-paid job as a champion of club sailing so they can at least give a nod to one of their (ignored) obligations. Two problems: (1) i would n't half annoy them (2) I'd spend all weekend driving around the country as opposed to sailing

It is human nature that expectations inflate. If my dad had a wooden mast I want an alloy one and my child wants a carbon one. It is good to expect more, it drives us forward. But it does push prices higher and higher, faster than simple inflation. And eventually therefore becomes unaffordable.
However, when Topper introduce cheap rotomolds they get scorned at an d told they're it proper boats!

This isn't a new problem, of course. I had a very old, overweight Cadet, and most of the other boats were nearly new and all tricked out. Attitude was I was wasting my time. I sailed Fireflies instead, and am pretty wary of the whole system now. But I can see that it doesn't have to run like that, and it really needs good training at clubs to keep sailors, unless they really are determined to join the squads. It shouldn't be that joining a squad is the only way of getting decent training.

But Rupert this isn't a squad issue this is just the gullibility of a large percentage of sailors who believe all the sales hype. As we have discussed ad infinitum, most sailors in the UK do not train we simply rock up at our clubs and take part. For us the performance increase from the latest must have rig enhancement can provide is miniscule in comparison to just practicing a bit more. What it highlights is the desire for your average sailor to want to keep up with the Jones's and have the latest kit as I guess it gives them a warm feeling inside and a sense that they are taking their sport seriously by spending more on it, but it's largely all for nothing.

but are squads pushed to youngun's as the only way to progress your sailing career (for want of a better phrase)? You'll never get anywhere if you're not a the squad??? Thank god I never had never heard of them when I was that age, I was too busy telling my dad he was getting it wrong under the threat of a bash round the back of my ear with a mirror tiller extension
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

The squads tend to be where keeping up with the Jones's is at its worst. Yes, it happens at club and open meeting type stuff too, but it isn't gospel, as Jack Sparrow's kid found in the oppies, but just one way of doing things.

No wonder the Tera has caught on.

Well the teasing - that's what kids do.  Nasty weren't we?

Did Sparrow junior stop any other sports when he got teased?  I moved Rugby Club as a 7 year old in similar circumstances, and with coaches who had a similarly unhealthy approach.

But is that the System or the individual?  It doesn't quite chime with how Racing Coaches are taught nowadays.

I'm afraid to burst your bubble Rupert, but the Tera's have a squad system too.....

As do the aero 5s.  Blatant cashing inn n parental ambition, or simply parents wanting structured sailing for their youngsters?
