I'd not buy a boat without testing, but a review would certainly make me think about options that I'd maybe not considered. And if it is cold and dark out, a review can make you dream a little.

Did think it was a very good test, but I do think your point about getting a long test in any boat you buy, if possible( especially if your spending thousands) is a very relevant. I bought a new British moth 18 months ago with out sailing it. Great boat, carbon mast and all the toys. Never got to like it and sailed slowly because of it. Have just done a boat swap for another older British moth and now have a boat I like again, am sailing faster and have money in the bank. ![]() I do understand this situation is unusual but it was a very relaxing way of boat buying. ![]() ![]() |

It was a good test by someone who's knowledge of this type of boat is second to none. It would be interesting to hear his views at 12-15knots of course, but perhaps that will happen. Y&Y tests are read, but its amazing that in the last 15 years it appears there has never been a bad boat tested ;-) Independents like Steve are of much more use, but again, the only real way to find out is test them yourself, on the type of water you will sail them on, and if you can, in the light and the windy.
We started with an idea that 6-7 regulars may change and shortlisted 3 boats between us. As it happened only RS and Suntouched actually brought their boats to us or had local demo's. The only option on the third boat was for us to travel to it and sail it in very different conditions, so it fell by the wayside.

Interesting review if only for wanting to know what the expression 'drop the knot' means when he was talking about launch recovery, that beach is pretty benign compared to ours but he was going on about this drop the knot technique in recovery so I'm now intrigued.

I believe he takes the knot of from the end of the boom (on the Zero) which allows the mast to freely rotate (I could be wrong though). Drop him an email I am sure that he will reply.

Mind you compared to some of the rubbish that used to be about 30 or 40 years ago there probably *hasn't* been a bad boat tested... I can think of plenty of boats that haven't or wouldn't suit me suited me recently, but actual bad boats? Grief even the IMHO dreadful 5 Tonner still has its proponents... That's it. No need to email him - just scroll down through the blog to a really good piece on lee-shore recovery in a variety of boats.

I will freely admit I am a bit of a boat tart and I have only sailed 1 boat that I didn't personally enjoy in the last few years. I won't name the boat but I have since sailed another example of it and whilst it was better it definitely still felt 'wrong' to me. The guy who has bought it loves though. So whether there is a truly 'bad' new boat out there is probably subjective....

"Ugly" we might be able to agree on "bad", probably not.
And no, I wasn't referring to either of the *eros! I was thinking of one boat I saw at the Show - can anyone guess which? |

Here's a fact - more car magazines are bought by people after making a purchase to retro-jsutify their buying decision ten before. Or perhaps that's another urban legend
