Now thats where the old Crystal Palace venue was good. I remember in the long hall (whichever that was) there was a club stand who had a tele on it showing videos. Soon retuned by the stand hosts into the England/Ireland match. England won, so all in all it was a better day.

Nothing to the misery of watching Scotland going down to the Italians on the Palm Court telly, with the England supporters 'helping', still what a difference 24hrs makes Smile Then dinner in Carluccios Cry

Well done Brightlingsea SC on being RYA club of the year, always fond memories of sailing there a number of years back (some a bit blurred!). When we finally get around to retiring in the next n years and move back to Essex, we'll be looking forward to joining.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

... Well of course we are rather pleased about your godsons carefully considered assessment !  He was not alone either from the feedback received.

We loaned a brand new Blaze to the CA for the show and they supplied a second one this year in what proved a very good move.  This was an 'original' early, but upgraded Blaze, that was all of 16+ years old and was offered for sale for a mere £ 1,700.  After all most people start in a pre-used boat in most classes and a key point was made.

It was very possbly the best show in years for the class as well so a tired but very pleased troupe of CA volunteers were glad they were there for all sorts of reasons  .. well it was far better than watching the Rugby this weekend anyway for the English amonst them  !

But I still pine for the proper Dinghy Exhibition at Crystal Palace (encouragingly, the godson prefers 'Exhibition' too!).  Was it all really so long ago?:
1973 (I'd forgotten there was no need to choose a colour for your boat back then):
1974:
1975 (colour makes it seem many years later!):
and by '78 for a few years we were at Pickett's Lock (also better than Ally Pally imho):
Dodgy commentaries (note the 'Fireball), but interesting how many of the classes are still around (cue Grumph)

They're ace! In fact, I'm not certain, but I think I spotted myself and Gareth T in the 1978 one (8 seconds in)!

Seems to me that a show with dinghies, kites, windsurfers, mountain bikes, canoes, climbing and any other outside equipment sports would be good. I guess the trouble is that dinghy sailing is the only one which has non commercial CA stands.

I'd go, though.

There's the National Watersports Festival - which has all of that, is at the end of the summer nicely out of prime holiday season and has an excellent social scene, training, intro sessions, racing, freestyle , live bands, food stalls with anything from Thai to Tapas to a bacon bap.  Camping is on site and someone even has the forethought to have the toilets serviced first thing Sunday morning.

It attracts thousands of visitors each year and showcases a wide range of water sports actually on the water, as well in exhibition tents and through the wider reaches of social and sports media.

The racing splits off amateurs and pros/semi pro/circuit bunnies.  Everyone is welcome, the rules being loosely observed for safety only (no turns or tantrums) and it gets well into triple figure entries - quite a few in fancy dress and a very healthy balance between genders and age groups.

One minor problem - dinghy sailing isn't invited.  Not yet anyway.

No as i recall there was always pressure for space and we got squeezed out a couple missed it one year and that was it, we were gone, I believe it was at the time they built an indoor pool for the LBS and dragged us all up there, we didn't have the budget for two shows, then that one foundered and we were all out on our ear..
I'm sure we'd be back there in a flash if it were thought to be to the benefit of the show, but i doubt there is space, the couple of times i went alone recently it was a struggle to get space.

I think it got too big, for the venues which were prepared to host it?
