I only remember it from Cryatal Palace - boats out in yards, narrow corridors - a very strange place, but maybe that suited 1970s dinghy sailors. Ally Pally much better, I think.

Actually one thing that really did bug me this year was that some stands in the central areas of the floors had erected big 'hoardings'/banners where they backed on to the next walk way. This gave the areas a very closed off feel (and I bet those with stands behind them were really pleased).
I guess there is nothing stopping them doing that but it made some areas seem a bit unfriendly. Different to previous years where the place has been much more open and you can wonder between stands a lot more easily.

According to this site: http://www.rigtube.co.uk/Exciting%20new%20products%20launched%20at%20RYA%20Volvo%20Dinghy%20Show%202010.pdf
"The first show, called “The Build your Own Dinghy Exhibition and Conference”, took place in 1952. By
1965 the show had moved to Crystal Palace, changed its name to “The London Dinghy Exhibition” and
gained the active backing of the RYA, before becoming under full RYA control in 1983. From 1996 to 2004 the show, now held at Alexandra Palace, was known as the Sailboat and Windsurf
Show. In 2004 the show title changed to the RYA Dinghy Sailing Show, to reflect the show’s focus on
dinghies and is today known as the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show." Actually, however, the exhibition was known as 'Sailboat' at least as early as 1992 (probably earlier), and moved to Ally Pally in '95.

Those films show that Crystal Palace had a large arena too, and it had mezzanine floor where i.a. some clubs had stands. There were also classes that couldn't fit inside lined up along the path you took from car-park to hall (tho' they had room for that huge boating lake inside! I recall they had one of the first Isos sitting on it one year). I thought the whole thing had more character.

As I recall if you weren't an RYA affiliated class you had to be outside in the cold. I think AP is probably the best venue, it was a real down if you got thrown out to one of the outer halls at CP, which was rather likely to happen to classes not approved by the then much less demotic RYA. crystal Palace must have been a right pain to get to if you weren't from NE Surrey too. I've been to Picketts Lock shows, but don't really remember them. I believe the place we knew has been demolished.

You can thank me indirectly for the show being at Alexander Palace, when we sold our windsurfing show that used to be held there, in 1987, they ran one more I think 1988, then moved and the RYA guy at the time who was also well into the windsurfing scene, Phil Jones leapt at the slot we left open.
They were at Crystal Palace, we were in temporary accommodation built after the fire while they refurbed the main hall which opened in 1988 with Princess Anne coming to the show which the RYA were heavily involved with at the time, so when the new owners moved the windsurf show fatally to Thorpe Park, the Dinghy show moved in. Some time later after the demise of the Wind & Surf show, we canvassed heavily to have a windsurf section within the show which duly occurred for a number of years. By the look of it's spartan appearance now there's a window opening for wider participation from other waters sports, I've never seen it so dead as this year. Maybe some kite, kayak and windsurf features would liven it up a bit, who knows, I wouldn't know who to talk to these days, Jenny Curry retired a while back and she was always the principle custodian of affairs concerning the show. It could do with another hall to be honest, we did consider an external marquee but all that does is remove valuable parking, one of the principle issues up there, that and communication, it's not the easiest place to get to.

I'm sure there was more to it than I remember - I guess I'd have been 10 or 11. |

There were definitely more cheap gear stands there, rather than the virtually full market price offerings you get now. End of line meant 50-75% off, not 5%. At least that's what I seem to remember from crystal palace. That and it felt more like you were exploring there too. All in big hall kind of loses its enigma to me, bit too corporate feeling

I remember going as a kid where the price you pick a drysuit up for justified the trip....
My latest drysuit was less than £200 despite an RRP of nearer £400 from the manufacturer. It's easier to shop about now, great... one less sailing pass not used up on sailing shopping.
